Collectables' somewhat generically titled Soul Classics series actually focuses on the romantic side of style, gathering soulful love songs from the '70s. Soul Classics, Vol. 1 features the Isley Brothers' "For the Love of You," the Intruders' "I Wanna Know Your Name," and David Ruffin's "Statue of a Fool" among the highlights of its eight selections. Though each of the album's cuts, which include work by Phyllis Hyman, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the O'Jays, is solid, the collection's overall length is too short to recommend it to anyone but the most casual fans of classic soul. ~ Heather Phares
Although its song selection is a little haphazard, EMI-Capitol Special Markets' Soul Classics, Vol. 1 is a nice sampler of '70s and '80s soul. Since it spans so much time, from Little Anthony & the Imperials' '60s hit "Goin' Out of My Head" to Freddie Jackson's 1985 rave-up "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)," it's a little inconsistent, but there are enough good moments -- Al Green's "Full of Fire," Ann Peebles' "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down," Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack's "You're Lookin' Like Love to Me," A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie" -- to make it a worthwhile budget-priced collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Soul Classics Vol. 1 Music Soul Classics Vol. 1 Songs | 1. | For the Love of You - The Isley Brothers |

Soul Classics Vol. 1 songs
$7.55 Samples include "Make The Music With Your Mouth Biz" (as performed by Biz Markie), "Superman Lover" (as performed by Johnnie "Guitar" Watson), "Someone Who Will Take The Place Of You (as performed by Isaac Hayes) and "Slippin' Into Darkness" (as performed by War).
Monifah, who sang in Off-Broadway shows as a child and later toured as a backup singer for reggae crooner Maxi Priest, is a true diva. On MOODS...MOMENTS, her debut album, she flaunts her amazing vocal talents without resorting to tactics or gimmicks. She does show off great emotional range, though. "You" and "Don't Waste My Time" illustrate a brash confidence; "It's Alright" displays a much softer side.
When Monifah's smooth voice is turned over to the production hands of hip-hop-gone-R&B maven Heavy D (he produced or co-produced more than half of the album), the result is pure soul music. Monifah's success seems inevitable.
Monifah's rich voice is the first thing you notice on her debut album, Moods ... Moments, and it's the thing that keeps the album afloat through its occasional dull spots. Where most of her mid-'90s urban soul contemporaries are hell-bent on demonstrating their technical prowess, Monifah lays back and lets the music build, texturing her vocals with a variety of different shades and styles. She can be jazzy or she can be soulful, she can belt out an uptempo number or croon a love ballad -- it's clear that she has the gift. And, for the most part, producer Heavy D provides her with enough first-rate songs to make sure that we not only notice the gift, but that we don't forget it once the album is through, either. Although it would be nice to hear what Monifah could contribute to the songwriting, Heavy D's songs are varied and soulful, giving her a proper showcase for her prodigous talents. Moods ... Moments does have a handful of weak songs and could have ...

| | Priscilla Truth CD (2002)
Soul Classics Vol. 1 songs
$12.69 Â There's something about Priscilla.Though Priscilla has been described as neo-soul and as a cross between Jill Scott and Laura Nyro, Priscilla's debut album "Truth", has transcended the need to categorize.Brought together with a sense of individuality, "Truth" is an erotic, yet sweet, effortlessly brilliant album that erases any lines between color or genre. It simply presents the listener with a refreshingly clear yet free sound. The poetry in the songs seems to come together with grace and clarity, a deep sense of soul, and a jazz sensibility driving the listener to question their own truth.Priscilla sings with such ease and intimacy you have the feeling she is speaking exclusively with you.She plays with sound and space like falling leaves, moving gently, yet with great intention, around and through each other in time. Courtney Hard (ASCAP) was blown away by her lyrical style, and her voice was noticed right away by Timmy Regesford, (A&R for Dream Work records) who was shocked at the soul her voice carried. "Truth" features the production talents of Rod Clemmons (Verdict Records in NYC), as well as the song writing of Priscilla, who wrote all but one song. "Truth" seeks to establish a clearly multi- talented artist with her truth telling and her ideas about love. "What is life without love?" questions Priscilla."These songs are talking about my experiments with my truth and love." ...more about truth from Priscilla... The album is named " truth" because it is my truth. And using the words from Gandhi, "this is my experiment with truth".The fist song on the CD "So tenderly" was the first song that I ever felt was truly given to me as a gift.I was picking up the phone to call my mom, when I got this Chorus in my head,..."It all began so tenderly...so on" immediately I hung the phone up and grabbed my tiny recorder. Then I closed my eyes as suddenly this vision came into my mind. Somehow I knew that if I continued to watch this scenario in my mind I would be able to ...
