Steady As She Goes marks Voodoo Glow Skulls' first release since exiting their longtime home at punk haven Epitaph Records and moving their group to the more hardcore independent label Victory. Despite the label change, Voodoo Glow Skulls have retained the ska/punk style they are well known for, as the album offers a thick slab of upbeat, sometimes inane punk rock. The artwork and packaging are truly fabulous, as they depict a pirate theme; yet that theme rarely carries over into the group's music, excluding the rollicking "Yo-ho-ho" essence of "One for the Road." When Voodoo Glow Skulls aren't attempting to be humorous, they manage to squeak in a few songs that speak largely about the world, such as the jab at Los Angeles' continuous oppression towards ethnic cultures on "Ethnic Cleansing Day." The production quality of Steady As She Goes is undeniably poor, as the sound is murky and rough. One would think the band made this whole disc in their garage, and this may honestly be the case since they are credited with the production in the album credits. Although this certainly is not the best album Voodoo Glow Skulls have released, it does include a few positive notes, most notably the entertaining cover of Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' "Little Red Riding Hood." Fans of the band will enjoy this disc, but for new fans, this is an album worth passing on. ~ Jason D. Taylor

Steady As She Goes album
$9.89 There's a saying that there can never be too much of a good thing, and Rancid could've coined the phrase. Their irresistible old-school punk and their ska-in-the-garage guitar sound are sure to please anyone who thought the Clash were the best that '70s punk had to offer.
Yet, considering their loyalty to the original punk aesthetic, Rancid sound surprisingly fresh. ...AND OUT COME THE WOLVES proves the band knows ...

Steady As She Goes CD music
$9.89 All songs written by Voodoo Glow Skulls except "Charlie Brown" (traditional).
Released in both English and Spanish versions, Voodoo Glow Skulls' 1995 effort may have been one of the high points in popularity for the seven-member ska-punk outfit. Unlike some more laid-back performers in the genre, and coming from a time before the style was commercially successful, Voodoo Glow Skulls are a bit more heavy-handed on the punk part of the mix, resulting in consistently fast-paced and chugging song structures that occasionally erupt into triumphant horn breakdowns and chanted group vocals. The unfortunate aspect of this equation is that the band really isn't that great at punk rock, and the tracks tend to get muddled on a few occasions, though the group's ska stylings very nearly save the day a number of times. A cover of the traditional "Charlie Brown" and a few Spanish numbers come off pretty ...

Steady As She Goes music CDs
$27.95 Gregory Isaacs proved time and again that the quality of his work had become dependent on the strength and inspiration of his producer, and who better to coax the best from the singer, than Alvin Ranglin, the man responsible for his first number one hit all those years ago. Of course, the producer's style had changed from those days of yore, but even with a more ragga-fied sound, Ranglin retained an easygoing ...

Recorded between 1967 & 1979. Includes liner notes by Laurence Cane-Honeysett.
This two-disc set goes a long way toward validating the career of Joe Gibbs, one of Jamaica's legendary producers. Known as much for his strongarm tactics as his abilities as a musical svengali, Gibbs and his studio were vital to the transition of Jamaican music from the freneticism of ska to the more languid, spacious beat of rocksteady. Along with Lee Perry, Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid, and others, Gibbs moved Jamaican music from the gentle tones of mento and calypso toward the harder edge of American R&B and soul. Lyrical content changed too, ...

Steady As She Goes CD music
$22.09 Canadian singer/songwriter Luke Doucet plays guitar in Sarah McLachlan's touring band, and knows a thing or two about making the strings sing. He's played in Veal, his own garage-psychedelic band, and released several singer/songwriter albums noted for his multifaceted guitar work, although they've been lyrically spotty and a bit overwrought. On Blood's Too Rich, Doucet reinvents himself as an Americana -- or is that Canadiana? -- artist fronting a twang-heavy band that puts plenty of muscle into his tunes. Doucet plays all the guitar parts and neatly juggles pedal steel, reverb-heavy country, and crunchy rock riffs to augment his tunes. The White Falcon -- Rich Levesque, bass; John Dinsmore, six-sting bass; Paul Brennan, drums; and Melissa McClelland, backing vocals -- add plenty of drive to the arrangements, although they're augmented by a long list of extra side persons without any album credits to tell you who's playing what. "Long Haul Driver" starts with a slow acoustic intro and builds to a Waylon Jennings beat that drives the tune down the open road with a jaunty thumping grace. The title track is a reverb-soaked song of love gone wrong with a cryptic lyric and a solid country solo that alternates between rolling bass notes and rippling arpeggios. The Cure's "The Lovecats" is a jazzy, new wave romp that'll have you bouncing ...
