Highlights include "Uno Dos Adios," "Pick Pocket," "Who Do You Love," and cover versions of Cannonball Adderley's "Sack o' Woe" and "Dr. Jackle/Africa Talks to You," an interesting blend of the Jackie McLean and Sly Stone compositions. ~ Al Campbell

Lenny White Collection album
$12.35 Saxophonist Chris Potter honors the legacy of some of jazz's greats on Gratitude, his debut for Verve. The award-winning virtuoso and composer is compelling on his tributes to John Coltrane, Eddie Harris, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Parker, and several other legendary saxophonists. Gratitude contains nine original compositions written by Potter, who plays tenor saxophone on the majority of the songs, switches to soprano saxophone on "Eurydice," his tribute to Wayne Shorter, and plays the alto saxophone and Chinese wood flute on "Star Eyes," the tribute to Charlie Parker. Chris Potter is outstanding on bass clarinet on his composition "The Visitor" for Lester Young and captures the ambience that reflects the many styles of these accomplished players, including sliding from one note to a higher or lower note with intermediate pitches on "The Source," his tribute to the glissandi (sheets of sound) ...
| | Tony MacAlpine Violent Machine CD (2002) (Import) Sweden
Lenny White Collection CD music
$18.55 By 1996, guitar solo-heavy instrumental albums were looked down upon by the majority of rock fans -- as many had moved on to focusing on artists who put the importance of songwriting over shredding. However, you have to give Tony MacAlpine credit -- he didn't stray too far from his prior musical path on his solo release that year, Violent Machine. Featuring plenty of MacAlpine's six-string heroics, Violent Machine easily could have been released in 1989, and probably would have done battle with Flying in a Blue Dream in Guitar World magazine's year-end poll -- as evidenced by such selections as the album-opening title track, plus "Shoe Shine Cyber Boy" and "Mr. Destructive." But unlike many of the other similarly styled guitarists that MacAlpine has been compared to over the years, he is also a highly skilled pianist, and listeners get a glimpse of this on "Chopin Etude #12 Opus 10." And there are also a few other non-metal detours along the way, including the jazzy melodicism of "Sophisticated ...

| | Pat Metheny Way Up CD (2005)
Lenny White Collection album
$15.65 Guitarist Pat Metheny has been working with long song forms since his career began in the 1970s. However, his 2005 release, THE WAY UP, takes the extended form to the next level. One composition split into four sections, this album just may be Metheny's most ambitious work to date.
Collaborating with longtime associates Lyle Mays (keyboards), Steve ...

| | Miki Howard Three Wishes CD (2001)
Lenny White Collection album
$8.39 THREE WISHES was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album.
When the 21st century arrived, Miki Howard wasn't as big or as visible as she had been in the '80s and early '90s. But the former Side Effect vocalist still had her hardcore followers, and those are the people she obviously had in mind when she recorded Three Wishes for the L.A.-based, Concord-distributed Peak label. Recorded in 2000 and released in 2001, this pleasant, if unremarkable, CD isn't a radical departure from Howard's earlier solo efforts. Instead of trying to make herself relevant to the hip-hop-minded R&B scene of the early '00s, Howard sticks to her guns and emphasizes adult-oriented quiet storm music. There are no duets with R. Kelly or Pink, no collaborations with Destiny's Child -- Howard knows that her audience is the Anita Baker/Luther Vandross/Regina Belle crowd, and she wisely caters to that audience. So she deserves credit for being true to herself even though most of the material she has to work with on this album isn't mind-blowing -- likable, yes, but not mind-blowing. As it turns out, the album's best track is jazz instead of R&B/pop; "Kiss of a Stranger," a moody, haunting jazz-noir offering that employs Yellowjackets bassist Jimmy Haslip and former Weather Report drummer Alphonse Mouzon, is the only ...

Lenny White Collection songs
$9.89 For this excellent 1961 outing, jazz vocalist Dinah Washington is backed by an orchestra on all but one track. Washington's expressive singing is complemented by the rich, full sound here, and this is due, at least in part, to the intuitive conducting of Quincy Jones, ...
