| | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
James Brown Live CD music
$8.79 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's ...
| | 50 Cent Before I Self-Destruct CDs (2007) With DVD
James Brown Live music CDs
$11.19 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous but less ...

| | Molly Hatchet Locked And Loaded CDs (2003)
James Brown Live CD music
$12.39 They're not as universally known or respected as Lynyrd Skynyrd are, but Southern rockers Molly Hatchet have been on the road for nearly as long and continue to rock on-stage, as evidenced by the 2003 double-disc set Locked and Loaded. Unlike their "big brothers" in Skynyrd, though, Hatchet contained more apparent ties to heavy metal -- especially in their album cover artwork (which often depicts Conan-like warriors doing their thang), as well as in their guitar riffs. Locked and Loaded is a faithful document of latter-day Hatchet in concert doing what they do best -- laying down tough blues-boogie, and to borrow a line from the late great Ronnie Van Zant, "singing songs about the Southland." Standouts include such biker favorites as the set-closing "Flirtin' with Disaster," "Bounty ...
| | Everly Brothers Sing CD (1967)
James Brown Live music CDs
$10.89 Coming at what seemed like the low ebb of their commercial fortunes, The Everly Brothers Sing was neglected even by many fans at the time, and was overlooked for the next 38 years, until its reissue by Collectors' Choice Music in 2005. Actually, it represented some of the duo's most ambitious music of the late '60s, if not their most successful, and was as forward-looking musically as its immediate predecessor, The Hit Sound of the Everly Brothers -- released in February of 1967 and heavily laden with covers of '50s rock/R&B standards and '60s songs that were already identified as "oldies" -- was retro; the most interesting and challenging song from that record's sessions, "Even If I Hold It in My Hand (Hard Luck Story)," was left in the can, but not so with this, their next album. The duo had proved with the summer 1966 Two Yanks in England that they could hold their own with the Hollies doing Hollies' originals, and -- after the brief hiatus of Hit Sounds -- plunged into the swirling psychedelic waters of 1967 with new confidence. Their upbeat ...

| | Ian Siegal Bigger Plate Of Meat & Potatoes CD (2006)
James Brown Live album
$25.59 The titular "bigger plate" refers to an additional DVD now included with the original studio audio CD. This features a 90-minute show of a smoking, in more ways than one, performance of the Ian Siegal band at the North Sea Jazz Festival on tour to promote his Meat & Potatoes album. The simple answer to the obvious question of whether this justifies buying the album again for those who already own it is an unqualified yes. Siegal reprises six of the disc's songs and not only extends them but adds two covers that allow him even more room to stretch out. The closing "You Don't Love Me" is lengthened to a 15-minute centerpiece where Siegal wanders off on long but never boring talk/singing interludes that add an edge to his already spiked-up combination of blues, funk, and soul. His version of the Jimmy Liggins by way of Albert Collins "I Ain't Drunk" expands to over nine minutes. The total of those two tracks alone accounts for nearly a third of the show. Siegal's usual backing duo is also enhanced for this gig by guitarist Matt Schofield, a Nugene-signed act who is also Siegal's producer, and Schofield's keyboardist, Jonny Henderson. The beefed-up sound and extra musicians allow Siegal room to lay back, play occasional rhythm guitar, and even drop his instrument occasionally ...
