Chicago band Sweep the Leg Johnny's Going Down Swingin' is one of the rare instances where hyper-aggressive, angular math rock (though that's a term gone unused for some time) is complimented by breath-spoken vocals and 15-minute-mark opuses actually worth a second listen. The opening track, "Sometimes My Balls Feel Like Tits," combines the fierce dynamic that made bands like Slint sound so revolutionary with the stop-change smarts of Polvo and the unmistakable presence of Steve Sostak on vocals and alto sax. For this album, their fourth, Mitch Cheney of Rumah Sakit joins on second guitar, adding the density needed to play off Sostak's dominating horn. Songs like "Only a Rerun" approach a more traditional post-hardcore song structure with gratuitous pick-slides and flashy showmanship. Others, like "The One That Goes Boom" and "The Blizzard of '99," use the chords and transitions deemed melodies only by rock fans who dug a serious amount of Sonic Youth or, alternately, prog rock. Strange, and worse, is the tendency for chimey dual guitars to turn the constantly touring, sweaty, and aggressive Sweep the Leg Johnny into teary-eyed emo boys ("J. Daly's Message to Jacob and Sylvia" and "Rest Stop"). Gratuitous, maybe, and still ambitious after thousands of live dates and three under-the-radar albums, Sweep the Leg Johnny remains one of the most intense, unpretentious bands of their lot, Chicago or otherwise. ~ Daphne Carr

| | Tiffany Clark Trophy Girl CD (2004)
Going Down Swingin' music CDs
$15.19 HoneyBee Records recording artist and Atlanta native, Tiffany Clark, is on the brink of another major accomplishment with the 2004 release of her debut CD, entitled "Trophy Girl." The disc, produced by Erik Grant Bennett, contains ten original songs that cover lots of ground both musically and lyrically. From the thrashy "Better Off Alone," which humorously details the lack of suitable mates for girls these days, to radio-friendly pop/rock songs like "Long Gone" and "Talking to Myself," Tiffany's first effort is decidedly strong and engaging. But Tiffany is by no means a newcomer to the industry or the world of performing arts.A triple threat, Tiffany has worked as a singer, an actor, and a dancer. She didn't waste any time getting her face in front of the world, appearing at age thirteen as Suzy Harper in the Walt Disney motion picture "Tom & Huck," a 1995 remake of the classic Mark Twain story, starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Rachel Leigh Cook. Before that Tiffany had already been working on stage for years with The Atlanta Workshop Players, a touring theater group with which she has performed since an early age. Furthermore, at Atlanta's Fox Theater, she earned roles in "Annie," Cinderella," and "The King and I." Performances in "Fame" and "The Pajama Game" put a few more feathers in her cap and made her a standout among her peers. As if film and theater were not keeping her busy enough, she was also dancing regularly as a member of the Doris Russell Performing Company, where she studied jazz, tap, and ballet and performed in shows like "The Nutcracker" as well as at local venues and sporting events (she was also asked to sing the national anthem at Atlanta Braves games on several different occasions). ...

Imagine the soulful, funky rock of Prince and Lenny Kravitz combined with the confessional ballads of Coldplay or Zero 7 and fused with the virtuostic guitar styles of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton... now you might start to understand the sonic landscape that is the music of Scott Sharrard. Diverse influences abound in Scott's musical palate and the resulting fusion becomes the kind of sophisticated pop music that we have not heard in generations.
