(12 Customer Reviews)
Opeth's fifth studio album is the band's first step towards North American success. Produced by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and mixed/engineered by Fredrik Nordström (Dream Evil), BLACKWATER PARK is a landmark achievement for the band, with its silken progressive rock ambience counterbalancing the band's trademark blistering death metal brutality. Over the course of eight tracks, Opeth displays mammoth amounts of musical prowess, from the 10-minute opener, "The Leper Affinity," on through the emotive title track that closes the set.
Recorded between August and October 2000.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.CMJ (2/12/01, p.29) - "...Godlike....A metal fusion of Pink Floyd and the Beatles, Opeth uses dynamics and atmosphere in ways many other bands can't..." Village Voice (5/22/01, p.79) - "Avoiding the cornier trappings of goth metal and the Satanic hordes, Opeth paint on an epic canvas, sounding at times like... metal's answer to '70s King Crimson. Restless with moods and melodic lines, their impressively long songs flow and unfold over shifting blocks of rhythmic ice." Opeth Blackwater Park Songs Blackwater Park Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Perfection? Opeth, it seems, are a difficult band to pin down. Everywhere I turn, I am faced with a completely different description of their music. So far, the best I can come up with is 'dark progressive metal with death metal vocals' but to be honest that doesn't even begin to cover it. If you hate most death vocals or can't fathom prog metal, you may still find you can quite easily enjoy an Opeth album.
So, the 'Blackwater Park' album. For many fans - and, indeed, for many of those who don't adore the band but who do appreciate their music on occasion - this is seen as Opeth's best album and its easy to see why. There are the catchy, head-bangable opening riffs to 'The Funeral Portrait', the slow, atmospheric acoustic guitars of 'Harvest' and of course Mikael Akerfeldt's divine vocals. Its widely recognised by many fans of the genre that Akerfeldt has one of the best voices in the industry and he sounds fantastic on this album.
Of course, writing this, I'm probably preaching to the converted. Chances are, if you're reading this you're already a fan of the band and really just want to know about the bonus tracks. So, here goes. Both are relatively slow acoustic tracks and both are (in this humble reviewers opinion) incredibly beautiful. If you already like Opeth's other acoustic tracks, you'll love these, especially the wonderful 'Still Day Beneath The Sun' where once again Akerfeldt's voice shines. It's quite simply stunning.
So, should you buy this album? Well, if you've never heard Opeth before, you might be better off buying the original version of Blackwater Park, without the bonus tracks, simply because its cheaper. If you're a dedicted fan of the band, you need this album (but you already knew that). And if you're somewhere in between? Well if you don't already have a copy of Blackwater Park, I would highly recommend buying this one, but if you do, its probably not worth it for the two extra tracks. Beautiful though they are, they are admittedly not worth the extra money if you already have the album in its other form and don't adore the band.
Overall though, this has got to be as close to perfection as a modern day metal album comes. Pure genius. Submitted by blue_istari (North Yorkshire, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 3 found this helpful.
terrible vocals granted i am not a big heavy metal fan , but these type of vocals are why .i bought a opeth cd and there is only one song on the cd worth lisening to the song is harvest from the blackwater park cd .if their vocals were more like that they would be more successful. Truly inspiring metal In this day and age of cut & paste metal it really is difficult to come up with music that sounds fresh & original. Opeth manages to delve into the past and sprinkle some black metal herbs over this very heavy stew. You will not be dissapointed by Opeth - Blackwater Park is one of their bench mark releases - excellent band, excellent album. Buy it - you will not waste your hard earned dollars. Blackwater Park album
$14.45 DELIVERANCE, Opeth's sixth studio effort, is actually the first part of an ambitious two-chapter opus from Sweden's masters of brutal, progressive metal. Opeth had a plan to release a two-album set: one disc composed of pure death metal, and the other an ambient ...
| | Opeth Damnation CD (2003)
Blackwater Park CD music
$14.59 Best known for pushing the boundaries of progressive death metal, Sweden's Opeth have been gradually moving away from the traditional low-growling sound, towards a cleaner vocal style. Though their previous six efforts involved a signature balance of heavy and mellow sections, it wasn't until they started using the production of Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) that they began to shine. 2001's BLACKWATER PARK broke the band to a wider audience without taming any of their metallic fury. A subsequent limited edition contained two bonus tracks that hinted at a quieter version of Opeth to come.
DELIVERANCE (2002) picked up where BWP left off. But it was only the first of a two-pronged attack. DAMNATION is its counterpart and has all of the intensity without any of the bombast. Clean electric and acoustic guitars and vocals dominate the record. Wilson's keyboard touches add shading and color to the bleak Opethian soundscape--casual listeners might not even recognize this as the same band. Opeth continues to force ...

Blackwater Park music CDs
$13.85 Opeth's debut, Orchid, was quite an audacious release, a far-beyond-epic prog/death monstrosity exuding equal parts beauty and brutality -- an album so brilliant, so navel-gazingly pretentious that, in retrospect, Opeth's future greatness was a foregone conclusion. Fact is, these Swedes -- with the opening cut, "In Mist She Was Standing," exceeding the 14-minute mark -- laid their cards on the table at the beginning of the hand and still took the pot, so ambitious and convincing is the band's artistic vision. And while the record finds the group searching for the razor-sharp focus and prominent emotional hook put forth on the later, classic releases My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, and Blackwater Park, Orchid is still an exhilarating listen, with the band meshing double-time death tempos with bleak, frostbitten riffs and moodily expansive, jazz-influenced, melodic instrumental passages sporting an abundance of delicate acoustic guitars and pianos. Mastermind Mikael Akerfeldt's guttural growls puncture the nearly interminable arrangements with the kind of brutality that stops die-hard death and black metal fans from giving up on the lengthy arrangements completely, although with five exorbitant cuts clocking in at ten-plus minutes (three of them over 13 minutes), some fat-trimming would have kept things ...

| | Juan Gabriel Con La Banda...El Recodo CD (1998)
Blackwater Park songs
$8.49 Presumably recorded before the death of Don Cruz Lizárraga in 1995 (he can be heard counting off one number), this set neatly caps off Juan Gabriel's second "traditional" period. La Banda el Recodo are an institution, having churned out the hits for several generations of Mexicans. They are a long way from the visceral blaring violence of their earlier recordings, when they were Octavio Paz's vision of fiesta as an outlet for repressed fury incarnate, but the new generation of El Recodo still can kick out the jams on their greatest tune, "El Sinaloense." Juan Gabriel, at this point in his career, has also seen better days -- with his vocal range and weight moving in opposite directions, he is, one senses, easing into his new role as a caricature of his former self. Uncharacteristically, most of the tracks on the disc are reprises of past hits he wrote for himself and others, and these reprises are actually the highlights of the album. Banda is all about energy, and much of the ...
| | Killer Dwarfs CD (1989)
Blackwater Park album
$13.49 There was a point in the late `80s, when "melodic metal" basically meant pop bands hiding behind a pretty boy frontman, big hair, and a few metal-y riffs -- case in point, Poison, Winger, Warrant, etc. But a few years earlier, melodic metal still had some, well, cajones -- including the oft-overlooked Killer Dwarfs. Rising up through the same Canadian metal scene that had also spawned Anvil and Helix a few years before, the Killer Dwarfs early on could perhaps be compared to a Judas Priest/Iron Maiden/Saxon hybrid that also managed to have its eye on mainstream radio. And certainly one of their better releases was their 1983 self-titled debut. The band had no problem putting the pedal to the ...

| | Hammerfall Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken CD (2005)
Blackwater Park music CDs
$12.09 As helpfully pointed out in the title, Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken sees Swedish metal institution Hammerfall hoisting aloft the torch of power metal (unbent, unbowed, etc.) for the fifth full-studio album of their career. But "power" metal may no longer the best tag with which to describe the band, whose material here ("Blood Bound," "Fury of the Wild," "Born to Rule," etc.) is really better described as classic, vintage, or better yet, timeless heavy metal, if you will. Extract any telltale signs of studio technology or audio fidelity and the band's sound really could have originated in the '80s or '90s, as easily as the '00s. And even more telling is the relative absence of speed metal drumming, used here only for small portions -- not the entirety -- of structurally varied songs like "Secrets" and "Take the Black." This may sound like a silly little detail, but it really does liberate Hammerfall from unfair comparison to a slew of boring, cliché-bound contemporaries. Sure, "Never, Ever" is a cliché in itself for representing the textbook heavy metal ballad; but then what percentage of heavy metal bands have resisted this temptation since the establishment of the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" rule (whereupon all metal bands are required to include at least one slow song per album)? And seriously, although it really doesn't introduce anything new to the group's formula, Chapter V features simply stellar examples of pure metal anthemy, rife with positive influences: "Born to Rule" and "The Templar Flame" are both gang ...
