Most Lynyrd Skynyrd fans would agree that the band reached its creative peak in the 1970s, but that doesn't mean that Skynyrd's 1990s work is without merit. While it's true that the Southern rockers provided their most essential recordings in the 1970s, Skynyrd's 1990s lineups definitely had their moments in the studio, and their live shows continued to please die-hard fans. Released in 2000, Then and Now is an enjoyable, if imperfect, collection of live and studio tracks that draws on Skynyrd's three CMC International releases of the late '90s: Lyve From Steeltown, Edge of Forever, and Twenty. Inspired performances of 1970s favorites like "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," and "That Smell" (all of which were recorded at a show in Burgettstown, PA, near Pittsburgh on July 15, 1997) demonstrate that in the 1990s, lead singer Johnny Van Zant had no problem handling gems his late brother Ronnie Van Zant once belted out. And the studio tracks (which include "Preacher Man," "Tomorrow's Goodbye," and the swamp blues-influenced "Voodoo Lake") point to the fact that while 1999's Edge of Forever and 1997's Twenty aren't in a class with Gimme Back My Bullets, Second Helping, or Street Survivors, they're decent more often than not. Casual listeners would be better off starting out with a collection of Skynyrd's 1970s classics, but for hardcore fans, Then and Now isn't a bad CD to have in your collection. ~ Alex Henderson THEN AND NOW appropriately touches on "then," as some of the songs here are Lynyrd Skynyrd staples from the 1970s, and "now," as they're performed here by the late-'90s touring edition of the band, featuring original members Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, and Leon Wilkeson (guitar, keyboards, and bass, respectively). The album, a compilation derived from three earlier efforts, splits the difference between studio and live performances. Of the former, the most surprising track is "Tomorrow's Goodbye," a quite beautiful power ballad (complete with strings) about saving the environment. The live tracks are also impressive--Johnny Van Zant doesn't quite have his late brother Ronnie's unique mix of swagger and grace, but on crowd-pleasers like "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" he gets pretty damn close. | | Humble Pie Live At The Whiskey A-Go-Go '69 (1969)
Then And Now
$17.49 Humble Pie includes: Steve Marriott, Peter Frampton (vocals, guitar); Greg Ridley (bass); Jerry Shirley (drums). Recorded live at The Whiskey A-Go-Go, Los Angeles, California in December 1969. This is a DVD-Audio disc. The DVD-Audio content can only be read by a DVD-Audio player. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio tracks provided on this disc will play on a standard DVD player. This audio DVD of music from Humble Pie's U.S. tour in 1969 constitutes a helpful addition to the band's early recording history, which had been limited to the pair of studio LPs cut for Immediate Records. The opening number is an all-acoustic reworking of Graham Gouldman's "For Your Love," a showcase for Peter Frampton's acoustic guitar and Steve Marriott's soul shouting, and about as different as one could imagine from the compact, punchy Yardbirds rendition. The drums and the harder playing kicks in for "Shakin' All Over," which is similarly bent out of its familiar shape and pushed -- Frampton and Marriott's guitars and vocals are all over the map on the song, which is just about recognizable despite the absence of the familiar central guitar riff. "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and "The Sad Bag of Shakey Jake" are intact and nicely played, and are what one would expect and hope for from an actual live album. The finale, "I Walk on Gilded Splinters," is an extended jam that goes through a few interesting changes, but it just doesn't have the energy or cohesion to sustain its 20-minute length. The overall audio quality is above average for a live recording of this vintage, and the multi-track tapes were mixed under the supervision of surviving bandmember Jerry Shirley. It's not a truly great moment in the band's history, alas, but it is a flawed artifact of an early chapter in that history. ~ Bruce Eder As one of the premier British "boogie" bands of the late '60s/early '70s, it's widely agreed by classic rock enthusiasts that Humble Pie was best experienced in its natural habitat, the concert stage. HP was already the subject of several live albums from this era (most notably the classic 1971 ...
