CLASSICS is a wonderful collection of hand-picked standards chosen by Brian Wilson himself, the band's visionary singer-songwriter, and it features his own track-by-track annotations. Eschewing simpler early hits like "Surfin' U.S.A." and "409," the maestro instead goes mostly for more complex fare like the landmark "Good Vibrations," early-1970s nugget "Sail On Sailor," and the underrated SMILE-era "Heroes & Villains."
Things kick off tellingly with the portentous "Surfer Girl," perhaps the exact transition point between the band's sun-and-fun period and a deeper, more emotionally substantive vision. In Wilson's notes we learn that "The Warmth of the Sun" was written for JFK on the date of his assassination and "California Girls" is Wilson's favorite song. Otherwise, the songs speak for themselves, whether it's the isolation reverberating through "In My Room" or the lighthearted swagger imbuing "I Get Around." Equally impressive is the newly recorded "California Feelin'," a song packed with gorgeous harmonies and an irresistible melody that Wilson initially wrote back in the '70s and recorded specifically for this collection in 2002.

Q (8/02, p.139) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Brian Wilson's compiling is very well done....He takes the casual fan into the stranger waters of The Beach Boys' late-'60s work..." Uncut (9/02, p.123) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...superior compiling." Classics: Selected By Brian Wilson Music Classics: Selected By Brian Wilson Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Quality not up to par The quality of this album is not as good as most of the Beach Boys music. It contains some oldies and some lesser known songs. The volumn goes up and down. It is not their best work. Submitted by a reviewer (Piedmont, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Brian's Best In 1999 Brian Wilson started what nobody would have thought possible until it happened; he started a successful second career as a live solo performer. Most of the material was, of course, Beach Boy classics. He did not, however limit himself to an oldies radio revue. Brian sang the hits (except mercifully,"Kokomo"). He also included material that only the hard core fan would know. For this compilation, Capitol asked Brian to do something similar. These are Brian's Beach Boys greatest hits. Additionally, the songs are remastered and the sound is fabulous. I enjoy playing this CD in the car and in the office. I'm playing it now. It's Fun, Fun, Fun. Submitted by a reviewer (Ypsilanti, MI.
