There are few soneros out there who can claim the same level of pedigree that produced Yumuri. Born Moisés Valle, alongside brothers Orlando (Maraca) and Luis, one can only imagine how musical that house must have been. He met the salsa world head on in 1984 when he joined the very popular Elio Revé Orquesta (which, incidentally, gave him the name Yumuri), affording him the opportunity to share the stage with such vocal greats as Cheo Feliciano, Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, and Tito Nieves. Known especially for his amazing range, comfort in the upper registers, and improvisational ability, it was not long before Yumuri split from Revé to pursue a solo career, backed by his famous brothers. Though his 2002 release Tiene Bilongo does not feature both of the other fabulous Valles (Maraca does appear on the record), there's plenty of talent to go around. The record draws from Cuba's next-generation players, and was recorded for the island's premier record label, Ahi Nama. Yumuri still maintains a strong fan base in Cuba and around the world, and it's no surprise, after hearing his clear-as-a-bell voice and diesel-powered band. The music on this CD is mostly taken from radio shows in the series "The Navy Swings" performed during 1961-1970. Three different versions of drummer Shelly Manne & His Men, a top-notch hard bop quintet, are featured. The performances are mostly very concise (under three minutes), so solos are brief and sometimes only one horn is featured per song. However, the music is a valuable addition to the discography of such players as Manne, trumpeter Conte Candoli, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, altoist Frank Strozier, and pianists Russ Freeman and Mike Wofford, with four numbers from Manne's lesser-known post-bop 1970 group. ~ Scott Yanow

This chapter in Atavistic's Unheard Music Series is the CD issue of a 1982 album by saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff, and drummer Günter "Baby" Sommer. There is an interesting contrast of styles here, given the formalist tradition Mangelsdorff came from and the staunch vanguardism of Brötzmann and Sommer. Of course, this is a blowing session that took place at a German Jazzfest and those contrasts work here to the betterment of the music. As Brötzmann blows his guts out, he gets reined in over and again by the repetitive phrases, short lines and fills of the trombonist. He even feeds off of some of Mangelsdorff's melodic lines to move his harsh blowing somewhere else. This is most evident on the opening piece, "Instant Tears," where the saxophonist gets his way often, but he's made to work for it instead of just playing louder than anybody else. "Wie du Mir, So Ich Dir Noch Lange Nicht," begins withy a long, quiet cymbal whisper by Sommer that begins to pop and groove after a minute or so, rhythmically moving in a single direction: toward swinging. This becomes a full-fledged drum solo until about 3:22, when the trombonist enters with a smattering of notes that are rooted in blues phrasing, ...
