This is part of A&M Records "20th Century Masters The Millenium Collection" series.
Jeffrey Osborne's edition of 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection is an excellent summary of the smooth quiet storm singer's peak period -- namely, the years between 1982 and 1988, when he was constantly turning out hits for A&M records. The biggest of these hits -- "On the Wings of Love," "Stay With Me Tonight," "Don't You Get So Mad," "You Should Be Mine," and "She's on the Left" among them -- helped make him one of the most popular R&B singers of his era, and they remain some of the classiest, best urban soul of its era; they've aged remarkably well, thanks in part to the polished production, but mainly thanks to Osborne's supple voice. There may be more extensive compilations on the market -- such as 1999's Ultimate Collection on Hip-O -- but this provides a sweet, succinct, satisfying summary of his solo peak. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Marshall Crenshaw What's In The Bag CD (2003)
20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Jeffrey Osbourne
$15.05 If you had to pick the single most dominant lyrical theme in the history of postwar pop music, it would probably be love, and on his first few albums Marshall Crenshaw wrote better songs about girls -- longing for them, and trying to win them over -- than anyone of his generation. Two decades on from his instant classic debut, Crenshaw still has plenty to say about love, but 2003's What's in the Bag? finds an older and more world-weary Crenshaw singing about men and women, not boys and girls, and contemplating a world where relationships are often hard work without the promise of a happy ending. What's in the Bag? begins with "Will We Ever?," in which Crenshaw takes the voice of a man on the road late at night, wondering when or if he'll ever see his wife again, and the melancholy beauty of the lyric is matched by Greg Leisz's steel guitar and the vibes of Bill Ware. It's a powerful and richly evocative performance, and it sets the stage for the rest of the set, in which Crenshaw's characters are ...

The Double Bassist:NHOPNiels-Henning Orsted Pedersen was described by Oscar Peterson as "arguably the most inventive bassist in jazz"Pedersen, who was customarily referred to as "NHOP", was among the most frequently recorded jazz musicians in history, having taken part in more than 400 albums. There was hardly a major international name with whom he had not played during the last 40 years.Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, the son of a church organist, was born at Osted, Denmark, on May 27 1946. He began piano lessons at the age of seven, and at 13, when he was tall enough, took up the double bass in order to play in his family band. He made such rapid progress that, within two years, he was playing at the Montmartre Jazzhus, Copenhagen's ...
