Recorded between 1962 & 1969. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
This 18-track compilation is missing a few songs that are on other Duprees anthologies, such as Ace's 31-track Their Complete Coed Masters, and even Rhino's 18-song The Best of the Duprees. Where this has a possible edge on the competition is the inclusion of three late-'60s songs from Heritage singles, where the other comps include only 1962-1964 Coed recordings. That's a small edge, since those late-'60s cuts are just average harmonized AM pop with a modernized doo wop tinge. If you're not fussy about having the complete Duprees Coed catalog, the other tracks on the CD cover that era -- which is the bread'n'butter of the group's discography -- satisfactorily, including the big hits "You Belong to Me," "My Own True Love," and "Have You Heard," as well as numerous lower-charting and non-charting sides from singles. It's a reasonable overview of one of the more talented Italian-American vocal groups from the tail end of the doo wop era, tilting closer to adult pop music than rock, but done with good taste and fine harmonies. ~ Richie Unterberger

$13.49 Here's a real grab bag of Top 40 hits from 1960 to 1966, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really not that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. It leans toward the innocuous pop side of pop/rock, though within that framework there's a lot of variety and a good amount of quality: slightly soul-influenced pop (Gene McDaniels' "A Hundred Pounds of Clay"), poppy, late doo wop (the Velvets' "Tonight [Could Be the Night]," the Chimes' "Once in a While"), British Invasion pop (Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas' "Bad to Me," the Honeycombs' "Have I the Right," the Seekers' "I'll Never Find Another You," Cilla Black's "You're My World"), celebrity teen idols (Patty Duke's "Don't Just Stand There"), weird foreign one-shots ...
| | Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD (2002)
All-Time Greatest Hits songs
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning ...

All-Time Greatest Hits music CDs
$15.65 The Hollywood Brats announce their presence on their self-titled album, re-released in 1999, with a plinky piano that drips with campy fun -- especially the last wrong note hit before a wave of guitars washes away the tinny sound with a full rock & roll barrage. And these wink-wink touches are layered onto the album thicker than the blusher caked onto the boys who played on it. "Courtesan," has a slinky go-go dance beat, over which a nasally croon warns of, "the girl with the dollar sign eyes." They deliver an amped up version of "Then He Kissed Me," complete with a gender-bending interpretation, and the hint of an exhibitionist's thrill at doing ...
