| | Quixotic Mortal Mirror CD Quixotic Discography of CDs
Quix*o*tic's deadpan delivery on their debut, Mortal Mirror, makes their gloomy garage and goth punk marches seem, though probably unintentionally, like an exercise in irony. The Washington, D.C., trio has toured with the likes of Sonic Youth, Papa M, Blonde Redhead, Fugazi, and the Rapture, but their debut lacks the dynamic power of those bands, not to mention guitarist Christina Billotte's own mod punk outfit Slant 6. "Ice Cream Sundae," for example, borrows directly from Syd Barrett's "Love You" ("Ice cream sundae/I've seen you looking good the other day"), but strips the reference of Barrett's loopiness, his kooky joy, and heartfelt sentiment. Aaron Neville manages to lift Quix*o*tic into more sublime territory when they cover his "Tell It Like It Is," but with Black Sabbath's "Lord of This World," you'd rather hear the original. Quix*o*tic sounds unlike any other band, sprinkling the Cramps' atmosphere with B-horror movie doom, but on their debut, they just haven't discovered how to make their unique sound immediate and compelling. ~ Charles Spano

| | Built To Spill Ancient Melodies Of The Future CD (2001)
Mortal Mirror CD music
$10.45 Built To Spill abandoned any strictly lo-fi leanings long before ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE, the band's fifth full-length release, but it is with this album that the trio's near-perfect balance of indie- (almost math-) rock and surprisingly irresistible pop hooks hits stride for a full, satisfying LP. ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE retains the line-up of Doug Martsch, bassist Brett Nelson, and drummer Scott Piouf for a third go around, and the consistency has paid off for the most level album of their career. From tracks like the insistent opening track "Strange" to the meanderingly beautiful "The Weather," the album flat mesmerizes.

| | Warren Zevon Wind CD (2003)
Mortal Mirror music CDs
$15.89 THE WIND won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Keep Me in Your Heart" was nominated for Song Of The Year and for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Disorder in the House" won for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend Jorge Calderon, shortly after getting the news. The result is a tight group of 11 songs wrapped up in a year, despite a diagnosis that only gave Zevon three months to live. Along the way, plenty of famous names--both friends and fans--pitched in, including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam and Don Henley. Allusions to his situation are naturally sprinkled throughout, whether it's partying in the face of doom ("The Rest ...

| | Pere Ubu Why I Hate Women CD (2006)
Mortal Mirror album
$10.79 Named after a hypothetical and non-existent Jim Thompson novel, Pere Ubu's 13th studio album is one of the most interesting of their long tenure, and testament to the continually replenishing spiky ingenuity of group leader (and sole original member) David Thomas. WHY I HATE WOMEN examines a living slice of dread, as expressed by nervous drums, atmospheric guitars, and Thomas's anxiety-ridden singing. The jerky rhythms and vocals of the opening number "Two Girls (One Bar)" are like opening a door and being greeted by the entirety of the early 1980s no-wave scene. Ditto the unsettling swamp-fevered "Blue Velvet," which reverberates with David Lynchian ...
