If a listener picks up a 50-minute jazz album that only contains four songs, he or she will rest assured that the musicians really get a chance to stretch things out. In the case of Decidedly, featuring tested players like trumpeter Roy Eldridge, guitarist Joe Pass, tenor Johnny Griffin, and pianist Ray Bryant, this is a good thing. Recorded live in 1975 in Antibes, France, before an appreciative audience, the material is being issued for the first time in 2002. The group kicks off with an Eldridge original, "Bee's Bloos," and settles into a relaxed groove for the rest of the show. A 16-minute take of "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)" follows, with lengthy, soulful solos handed in by everyone. Bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and drummer Louis Bellson offer tasteful underpinning along with a little muscle on "Undecided." The disc closes out with an appearance by Milt Jackson on piano for Thelonious Monk's "Hackensack." It will perhaps seem odd that this swinging set, performed in France while the fusion movement was sweeping the states, will probably have a more receptive audience today than it would have had over 25 years ago. But history, and good taste, are never predictable. Decidedly is a lovely live disc, and will be appreciated by fans of any of the participants. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

This LP contains six Bill Russo arrangements, five from Stan Kenton, and one by Lennie Niehaus. The repertoire features many songs not associated with Kenton (such as "Sophisticated Lady," "Pennies from Heaven," and "Over the Rainbow"), but the inventive yet melodic treatments certainly sound like the Kenton band. Ahmad Jamal's early recording career is given a reasonably in-depth survey on this 18-track, 72-minute collection of material from 1951-1955. The earliest four of these tracks feature him at the head of a trio with guitarist Ray Crawford and bassist Eddie Calhoun, but the remainder of the set (all recorded in 1955) were cut by the lineup with Jamal, Crawford, and bassist Israel Crosby. It might be tamer and more conventional than Jamal's later material, particularly due to the absence of drums (though there are plenty of popping percussion punctuations). It's still highly respectable early cool jazz, with the accent on covers of standards, though there are a few Jamal originals sprinkled in (including one of his most renowned early compositions, the funky "Ahmad's Blues"). Too, this has his interpretation of "Pavanne," which was likely influential on both Miles Davis' "So What" and John Coltrane's "Impressions." My name is Paul Ray. I am the sole founding member of the band whose story will unfold in the next few paragraphs. Blues Savant has been, at various times, a person, a group, and a concept.Somewhere in the early '90s, I, a guitarist of moderate ability, set out to learn the deep dark secrets of authentic Mississippi Delta Blues. I was working on a comedy piece, an audio documentary about the life of a fictional bluesman. I decided that in order to be done right, I would have to make the music sound authentic. That led to a two year journey into the history of the music, and those who made it. From that journey emerged a new and changed me, a self described "Blues Savant." New and unimaginable "blues noises" were now eminating from my Guild D4. In 1993, I began an acoustic duet with my college band mate, Tom Roser. We played coffee houses around Chicago for about a year as Blues Savant. In the following two years, as "Paul Ray, the Blues Savant," I recorded three solo CDs of acoustic blues.
