You can lump the Slip in with the countless legions of jam bands if you like, but you'll be doing a disservice not only to this unique trio but to yourself. Those who avoid HORDE tours like the plague shouldn't fail to open their ears and hearts to the Slip's distinctive sound. A freewheeling blend of jazz, rock, folk, and funk influences, ANGELS COME ON TIME features plenty of fluid instrumental improvisation, but where many of the Slip's peers are short on compositional know-how, this album features a set of finely crafted compositions dripping with both lyrical and harmonic sophistication.

Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. Composed, arranged and conducted by Mr. Paunetto, the music on COMPOSER IN PUBLIC achieves a smart balance between straight-ahead and smooth styles. A great fan of film composers himself, Paunetto realizes melodies and textures that evoke all manner of tuneful scenery. His tribute to the genre, "Movies," is exceptional in this regard - the combination of drum brushwork and electric piano carries one to lovely places.
"Bottle The Edge" grooves hard in a funky meter, with abrupt statements by the horn section that pierce through each restless solo. While things stay instrumental for the most part, the semi-Bossa "If You..." is graced by the sweet-laced pipes of singer/guitarist Ann Belmont. A fine, easy-rolling affair altogether.
