The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' third album for A&M continues their good-natured Southern chooglin' with hints of a newfound mid-70s AM pop vibe. Although it was recorded in Nashville, The Car Over the Lake Album has a distinctly Californian vibe on several tracks, particularly those written and sung by drummer Larry Lee, whose contributions could ride along "Ventura Highway" with any of America's recordings. Despite this warm Beach Boys influence, the album is still a Southern rocker, evident on "Keep on Churning," "Leatherwood," and the slightly goofy "Gypsy Forest." The hard-rockin' push of "If You Want to Get to Heaven" is nowhere to be found on this album, but the laid-back porch-sittin' hum of "From Time to Time" and the spectacular "If I Only Knew" acts as an acceptable substitute. ~ Zac Johnson The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' third album for A&M continues their good-natured Southern chooglin' with hints of a newfound mid-'70s AM pop vibe. I've been waiting. It is almost unfair for me to review this CD. I have been waiting for the Ozarks A&M releases to come out on CD for 17 yrs. All I can say it was worth the wait. As good as I remember. Submitted by jeffersus3 (La Crosse, WI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Study in contrast I really like the Daredevils, and am trying to replace all the old albums with CDs. I remember getting the Car album with the little red record, and being disappointed with the every growing disparity between the mellow, Larry Lee/dominated songs and the hick bluegrass/country rock tunes. Well, my memory served me well. While I consider this effort to be sub par, it was still worth the purchase, expecially for the Randall Chowning and Larry Lee tracks. I'm still waiting for the Men From Earth masterpiece to be reissued. Anyone found it yet? Let me know. Anyway, you'll need this if you want to complete your OMD collection, but don't make this the first or only CD of this band! It's not their best, even with the bonus red record tracks, but it brought back memories - good and bad. Submitted by jmarks (Downingtown, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fantastic Finally reissued on CD.On of the best by OMD.I would highly recommend Submitted by a reviewer (Lafayette,La) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent This album ranks among the best country rock works of the era. The style of this album is different than OMD's first releases, but contrary to one reviewer above, I believe it is OMD's best. This work is more similar in style to the Byrds, especially their Notorious Byrd Brothers album. The music is softer and more psychodelic/spacey than the more well known OMD work. A truly outstanding performance by a very fun band. The last three tracks 12-14 were included as a separate record on the original release. They are different in style, more bluegrass/rockabilly, than tracks 1 thru 11. Submitted by Jeff (St. Louis, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
