Barry Pepper, Chris Klein, Greg Kinnear, Keri Russell, Madeleine Stowe, Sam Elliott - Director: Randall Wallace On November 14, 1965, in a place known as the Valley of Death, in a small clearing about the size of a football field, Lt. Col. Hal Moore and 400 young troopers from the U.S. Air Cavalry were surrounded by 2000 enemy soldiers. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in history. Mel Gibson stars in this powerful story of real-life heroes who fought in Vietnam for country, love and freedom.

In 1965, 400 American troops faced an ambush by 2,000 enemy troops in the Ia Drang Valley (also known as the Valley of Death), in one of the most gruesome fights of the Vietnam War. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a detailed recreation of this true story: of the strategies, obstacles, and human cost faced by the troops that participated. The story focuses on the lieutenant colonel that led the attack, Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), and a civilian reporter who accompanied them, Joseph Galloway (Barry Pepper), as well as a number of other soldiers who were involved. This is an unusual Vietnam film in that it also shows the North Vietnamese perspective on the battle; their leader Lieutenant General Nguyen Huu An (Don Duong) is depicted as a brave soldier and smart commander. And in addition to the many gory battlefield sequences--which seem to have been influenced by SAVING PRIVATE RYAN--we also see how the carnage of war affects those left behind, the soldiers' wives and children. Ultimately this is a moving anti-war film, which, by sticking close to the true stories of real soldiers, very effectively brings home the overwhelming horror of war.

Theatrical Release: MARCH 1, 2002

We Were Soldiers Reviews:

"...Solemnly forceful....[Elliott] has what could be the best role of his career..." -- Mike Clark, USA Today

"...The movie, anchored by Mr. Gibson's modest disciplined performance, has a feeling of calm stoicism..." -- A. O. Scott, New York Times

"...[Kinnear] does that thing he does better and better with each role he takes, siphoning humor into a serious situation....[Gibson] discharges his duties maturely and successfully..." -- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"...[The battle] is brilliantly designed and shot....The film's major contribution to the Vietnam War movie is its willingness to view the enemy as human beings..." -- Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter

"...The battle, expertly shot by Dean Semler, captures the chaos of guerrilla warfare paralleled in BLACK HAWK DOWN and gives the film a scarring documentary realism..." -- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"...This is a true story that brings home the real horror of war, presenting a balanced, thought-provoking record of men who fought..." -- Nev Pierce, Total Film

"...Deft at pushing emotional buttons..." -- Michael Tunison, Box Office

5 stars Top rated from USMC Infantry
This is in my opinion the most powerful and realistic war movie EVER made. I've seen them all and this is by far the best. Its the best because its actually the way the Marine Corps trains in the field. It exemplifies honor, courage, and commitment. It closely follows Colonel Moore's book (which I read). This is not your typical Vietnam movie. Its a story of heroism, and sacrifice. As soon as I left the theater I said it is OSCAR CALIBER, and apparently the media agrees with its reviews. This is a absolute must for Marines and Soldiers alike. It may be too powerful for some Veitnam Vets due to its realism. To all of you, I salute you. Thank you. Urah!

4 stars Not Quite "Private Ryan," but an Excellent War Movie
I really enjoyed this movie. The DVD has quite a few extras (which I haven't viewed yet). I've watched this movie twice already, and enjoyed it both times. The war scenes are graphic, and there is a lot of Hollywood corn (like standing in the middle of a dozen enemy shooting a pistol and not getting a scratch, or last second air rescue before getting shot to hell), but all-in-all it was an excellent show. Mel Gibson does a great job (Sam Elliot is a little over-the-top).

On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done ...

With THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, director Peter Jackson has achieved a meticulous and captivating adaptation of the first book of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy. The setting is Middle-earth, a mythological land populated by elves, dwarves, humans, and the gentle, diminutive hobbits upon whom the story centers. One hobbit, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), unexpectedly comes into possession of an ancient magical ring so powerful it invariably corrupts anyone who wears it. In order to prevent the ring's erstwhile owner, the dark lord Sauron, from reclaiming the ring and taking over Middle-earth, a motley band of comrades set out to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom, where it was forged. Included in the group are Frodo and hobbits Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monoghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd); the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen); human warriors Aragorn (Viggo ...

Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, ...

Director Robert Zemeckis revolutionized the art of animated film in 1998's WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT by dropping cartoon characters into the same frame with flesh-and-blood actors. In THE POLAR EXPRESS, live action and animation have merged seamlessly, resulting in sparkling super-realism. A landmark technique Zemeckis and his Sony Pictures Imageworks team call "Performance Capture" perfectly suits the tenor of this wondrous children's Christmas story by Chris Van Allsburg. A disillusioned little boy, just old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus, has the adventure of a lifetime one fateful Christmas Eve. Clad in his pajamas, he climbs aboard a magic train to the North Pole, driven by a kindly train conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks who starred in both of ...

Funny man Will Farrell's humorous man-child antics meet actual kids on this soccer comedy. As vitamin salesman Phil Weston, Farrell's a sensitive man easily capable of both crying and sewing. Unfortunately for Phil, these qualities have never quite endeared him to his tough-as-nails father, Buck (Robert Duvall), who will stop at nothing to one-up Phil. He goes so far as benching Phil's 10-year-old son--his own grandson--on the youth soccer team he coaches. When Phil begs for more playing time for the boy, Buck trades his grandson to the last-place team, the Tigers. Not just any normal cellar-dwelling outfit, the Tigers feature a cast of lovable losers who prefer eating worms and telling jokes to playing soccer. When the Tigers' coach leaves, putting the season on the line, an inexperienced Phil steps in to helm his son's new team. With help from Buck's neighbor and rival, real-life football coach Mike Ditka--hilariously playing himself--the Tigers turn their season around. Fueled by a raging caffeine habit, Phil starts to be overly obsessed with beating Buck, losing sight of why he took the job in the first place--to ...
