Don't be fooled by the title. While Ballads and Blues may sound like a mellow batch of tunes to listen to while strolling in the park, the ever-soulful Joey DeFrancesco has something else in mind. The album takes off with "Get It All," a groovy piece of funk complete with Paul Bollenback's zesty guitar and Byron Landham's balanced backbeat. A steady, rocking groove also defines pieces like "Take the Coltrane" and "Jammin' in the Basement." The latter cut, in particular, emanates a good vibe, perhaps due to the presence of brother John DeFrancesco on guitar and Papa John DeFrancesco on a second B-3. Other guests include Pat Martino and saxophonist Gary Bartz on two tracks each. At least two pieces, "Home on the Range" and "Mama Don't Allow No," suggest that DeFrancesco has been hanging out with genre-bending guitarist Bill Frisell. And while soul-jazz renditions of folk songs may sound like a strange mix, every cut flows together in a lovely mesh of organ, guitar, and drums. DeFrancesco ends the album in a flourish by adding his smooth, rich vocals to "That's All." While his fans probably will not wait for a recommendation to pick up Ballads and Blues, everyone else will find the album a good introduction to organ music for the new millennium. ~ Ronnie D. Why Tony Joe White isn't spoken of in the same revered tones as J.J. Cale is a mystery as well as a crime. White invented a brand of greasy, funky, deeply soulful Louisiana bayou rock that's been quoted by everyone from the Neville Brothers and the Meters to Marvin Gaye to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to ZZ Top to Funkadelic to the Cramps to the Gun Club to the White Stripes. Parade may be Miko (aka Rie Mitsutake)'s first album, but she had been making music for years before the album was released. Parade's songs reflect Miko's seasoned approach in subtle ways; while pieces like "Merry Go Round" and the title track are undeniably winsome, with fittingly lilting, circular melodies, their twittering, slowly sparkling layers of electronics, guitars, and vocals sound so effortless that they're clearly the products of years of experience. And while Miko's songs are lovely, they're not as hyper-sweet as some fans of Japanese indie electronic pop might expect. On "Red Song" and "Kingdom," the gentle sultriness in her voice sounds all the more unique given its delicate surroundings. Likewise, throughout Parade she finds ways to push her music beyond merely atmospheric and into vivid sound pictures. What sounds like a broken calliope pumps away deep in the center of "Heartbreak Blues," while heavily strummed guitars and a siren-like synth cut through Miko's vocals on "Jagajaga." ...
