Subtitled "Flat Out Funk From the Jazz Brotherhood," this takes 18 Prestige soul-jazz cuts from the late '60s and early '70s. For serious collectors of this stuff, the big attraction here might be that 13 of the 18 numbers are presented in their 45 single edits, rather than their full-length album versions. To some, that might seem like a disadvantage, as you're actually not hearing some music from the longer versions. In its defense, it must be said that those 45 edits are pretty hard to find and also that, particularly for those who see this style as dancefloor fodder, the shorter edits are sometimes valued for honing in on the principal hooks and riffs rather than the improv solos. As a whole, it actually serves as a good sampler/overview of the large late-'60s/early-'70s Prestige soul-jazz catalog, which is spread out on innumerable albums and reissues and can be hard for a neophyte to taste in a manageable dose. Many of the big soul-jazz names on the Prestige roster are here, including Charles Earland, Idris Muhammad, Melvin Sparks, Gene Ammons, Charles Kynard, Boogaloo Joe Jones, and Rusty Bryant. Interspersed among the original compositions are instrumental covers of then-hits like "Son of a Preacher Man," "I Want You Back," "Super Bad," "Express Yourself," and Sly Stone's "Thank You, Pt. 1." It's a tasty helping of the house sound the label carved within this niche, with a jazz core but heavy on soulful brass, effervescent organ, and sharp R&B-blues-influenced guitar links, often bearing the influence of early funk (particularly James Brown) as well. ~ Richie Unterberger
BGP delves even deeper into the Prestige vaults and brings the funkiest music ever made in jazz land. They have searched out rare album cuts: Boogaloo Joe Jones' "Right On," plus Leon Spencer and Houston Person, who both take on the Meters. Also included Ain't Funky Now! Review

Ain't Funky Now!
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, ...

| | Twilight Saga New Moon The Twilight Saga: New Moon CD (2009) Original Soundtrack
Ain't Funky Now!
$15.45 Unlike the soundtrack for the first TWILIGHT film, the release that accompanies the sequel NEW MOON features entirely new, exclusive music. The collection is also much more indie rock-focused, and some of the artists even composed music specifically for the film. Highlights include the first single, Death Cab For Cutie's "Meet Me On The Equinox," the melancholy feel and lyrical hook of which ("everything ends"), pertains directly to NEW MOON's plot line concerning the end of the main characters' relationship, and Muse's epic "I Belong To You," which incorporates dramatic, gothic-sounding piano and orchestral flourishes which recall the earliest vampire movies.
After Twilight became a world-wide hit, the film series based on Stephenie Meyer's series of vampire romance books got a major upgrade. More time, effort, and money were poured into the second film, New Moon, and nowhere is this clearer than the film's soundtrack. New Moon's music is darker, more sophisticated, and much more indie-friendly than its predecessor's soundtrack, and features more of the artists Meyer credits for inspiring her writing. One is Muse, whose "I Belong to You (New Moon Remix)" is so dramatic that it's easy to hear how the band inspired Meyer's angst-filled love triangle between the clumsy yet somehow irresistible Bella Swan, her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen and her best friend (and ...
