Canadian singer/songwriter Amanda Marshall is concerned about the difference between appearance and reality on her third album, Everybody's Got a Story. On the title track, a tired pickup line inspires her to think about what people are really like, as opposed to what they seem to be at first. "Don't assume everything on the surface is what you see," she warns, and then goes on to expand on that theme in the rest of the album's story songs. That might make the collection sound somewhat preachy, but it's apparent as early as that first song that she is talking as much to herself as she is to anyone else. On "Double Agent," she reflects on her mixed heritage; appearing to be white, she is actually a mulatto with a Trinidadian mother and is made uncomfortable by whites who try to act black. On "Red Magic Marker," she complains that her infatuation must be obvious, though the object of her affection is not responding. "Brand New Beau" describes a surprising romantic betrayal in which the singer walks in on her boyfriend and his gay lover. Marshall's outspoken lyrics, sung in a throaty, soulful voice, are supported by an often gimmicky musical bed intended to disguise her basic girl-with-a-guitar persona. If she were just a folky, after all, she wouldn't be on a major label in 2002, and since she is, it's necessary to borrow production tricks from Madonna and Britney Spears to give her a chance at multi-platinum sales. Eight of the 12 tracks are co-credited to the Molecules team that provides drum and percussion programming. If the approach works, maybe her new fans will get a chance to hear the hilarious "Sunday Morning After" and the affecting "Marry Me" later on and realize there's a good songwriter here, too. ~ William Ruhlmann

Everybody's Got A Story songs
$19.65 Though MORPH isn't Fagen's first post-9/11outing (that would be Steely Dan's EVERYTHING MUST GO), it deals more explicitly with that world. For all the foreboding expressed in "Mary Shut the Garden Door," though, it takes a narrator as willfully perverse as Fagen to find himself turned on by the airport security officer ...
| | Natalie Imbruglia Glorious-The Singles 1997-2007 Special Edition CDs (2007) (Import) Bonus DVD; United Kingdom
Everybody's Got A Story album
$22.35 What was impressive about the Natalie Imbruglia album Glorious: The Singles 1997-2007 was that Imbruglia had a writing or co-writing credit on 13 of the 14 tracks, the only one not penned by her being the one that started it all, the classic "Torn." Starting at the most unlikely source as an actress on the daytime TV soap opera Neighbours (although it had produced singing stars a decade earlier with Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan), Imbruglia had carved out a singing career with a series of pop/rock singles with superb melodies, although never managing to top the exquisiteness of the single "Torn." So after three successful albums, Left of the Middle, White Lilies Island, and the number one Counting Down the Days, her record company, BMG, released this greatest-hits ...
| | Taylor Swift Fearless CD (2008) Enhanced CD
Everybody's Got A Story CD music
$13.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps ...
| | Michael Bolton Greatest Hits 1985-1995 (2003)
Everybody's Got A Story music CDs
$18.55 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Michael Bolton possesses numerous attributes inherent to a great recording artist--a grandiose voice able to be at once overwhelming and gentle, the vision to convey powerful emotional details with simple vocal inflections, the ability to set his songs in precise musical colors. But what is probably his most overlooked quality is also his greatest strength: The man is a tunesmith non-pareil. Not only is he a powerful songwriter in his own right (having written for everyone from Barbra Streisand to Kiss), but his knowledge and choice of cover songs borders on the omniscient. And they all become hits--the proof is on GREATEST HITS 1985-1995.
It was Bolton's renditions of soul classics that first gained him an audience. Zelma Redding, widow of the legendary Otis Redding, called Bolton's chart-topping take on "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" her "all-time favorite version," and his interpretation of "Georgia On My Mind" personifies the timeless elegance of modern pop. Yet his own compositions shine just as brightly: "Soul Provider" glides with a smoky, saloon feel, "How Can We Be Lovers" deftly communicates the complexities of relationships, and "Steel Bars" (co-written with Bob Dylan) moves with classic Bryan Adams-ish abandon.
