| | Classic Ballads CD Miles Davis Discography of CDs
Personnel includes: Miles Davis (trumpet); Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock (piano). On the face of it, this collection might seem an impromptu hodgepodge, with no liner notes or recording information. Ultimately it makes sense, though. These mid-period Miles recordings catch the trumpeter in his prime, doing what he often loved to do--dig into a juicy ballad. Accompanied by the likes of Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter and Cannonball Adderly, Miles weaves thoughtful, lyrical lines in and out of these tunes. He's equally effective at finding the heart of his own compositions ("Blue in Green," "Circle") and those of others ("Stella by Starlight," Shorter's "Fall"). As always, it's his taste and restraint as much as his inventiveness that makes Davis' approach work, and never more so than on ballads like the ones contained in this solid collection. Classic Ballads
$6.05 Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Marcus Miller (various instruments, bass, programming); George Duke (various instruments); Michael Urbaniak (electric violin); Adam Holzman (synthesizer, programming); Bernard Wright (synthesizer); Omar Hakim (drums, percussion); Steve Reid, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Jason Miles (programming). Producers: Tommy LiPuma, Marcus Miller, George Duke. Engineers: Peter Doell, Eric Calvi, Erik Zobler. The controversial but memorable Tutu is mostly a duet between Miles Davis and the many overdubbed instruments of producer Marcus Miller (although violinist Michal Urbaniak, percussionist Paulinho da Costa, and keyboardist George Duke are among the other musicians making brief apperaances). Certainly the results are not all that spontaneous, but Davis is in top form and some of the selections (most notably the title cut) are quite memorable. ~ Scott Yanow After 30-plus years with ...

$5.49 Compilation producers: Ken Kahn, Pete Welding. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet). CEMA Special Markets' The Ballad Artistry of Miles Davis culls highlights from Davis' Capitol and Blue Note recordings, including "How Deep Is the Ocean?," "Venus de Milo," "It Never Entered My Mind," "Dear Old Stockholm," "Moon Dreams," "Autumn Leaves," "Yesterdays," and "I Waited for You." Jazz purists will have little interest in this, since they'll want the original sessions, but this is a good sampler for casual listeners who want the sweet, slow side of early Miles. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Miles Davis was one of jazz's great ...
