Summer Salsa album
$15.39 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like vocal timbre of 15-year-old ...

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive ...

| | Andy Montanez Salsa Con Reggaeton CD (2006)
Summer Salsa album
$8.45 This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's new sound, which he calls "salsatón." The tunes are fun and danceable, a great mixture of thick, live sounds and the block-rockin' sound of the drum machines that give reggaeton its steely spine. Though bringing together a well-seasoned, gray-haired salsa vocalist with raw, contemporary talent may seem like a gamble, it seems to have paid off. Salsa con Reggaetón rose to the Top Five of more than one of Billboard's Latin Music charts. Andy Montañez sounds as strong and artful as he ever did. This is one for the books. ...

| | Tommy Boy Presents Hip Hop Roots CD (2005)
Summer Salsa CD music
$8.99 An entry-level class on breaks that's more like your favorite recess activity, Tommy Boy's Hip Hop Roots is based on some of the most notorious tracks sampled throughout the history of hip-hop. This demonstrates the keen ears required to hear the potential in unlikely sources -- take Billy Squier's "The Big Beat" (Run-D.M.C.'s "Here We Go," U.T.F.O.'s "Roxanne, Roxanne"), first spotted by Afrika Bambaataa, or the Monkees' "Mary, Mary" (Run-D.M.C.'s track of the same name), initially re-contextualized by Rick Rubin. The straight funk and hard soul that formed the backbone of hip-hop is also well represented through the Jimmy Castor Bunch's "It's Just Begun," James Brown's "Let a Woman Be a Woman (Let a Man Be a Man)," Lyn Collins' "Think (About It)," and Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's "Express ...

$12.69 Composed in 1991, the songs are layered atop a Casio rhythm track. This gives it a low-fi, manufactured-sound type atmosphere. Like a video game or music box. The lyrics hint at a skewed mental logic - some kind of private cosmology is underlying everything. It ...
