Casting aside the shackles that accompany any band whose first flush of success comes when its members are still teens, Silverchair makes a fresh start on a new label with their fourth album DIORAMA. Teaming up with producer David Bottrill, this Aussie trio abandon their earlier grunge-fueled sound for a more complex and lush approach more Van Dyke Parks (who contributes orchestral arrangements) than Van Halen. Seemingly more settled in his skin, frontman Daniel Johns operates with a rich tone in his voice that cuts to the heart of the soaring "World Upon Your Shoulders" and equally enchanting "The Greatest View" (featuring Midnight Oil's Jim Moginie. Also noteworthy is "Tuna In The Brine," a cut overflowing with intriguing string arrangements. The DIORAMA created by these talented Aussies turns out to be one of delightful nuance.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Rolling Stone (8/8/02, p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The group have become genuine artists on their own terms. Heavy orchestration, unpredictable melodic shifts and a whimsical pop sensibility give DIORAMA the sweeping feel of the work of Brian Wilson or Todd Rundgren...it gets better with each listen." Q (8/02, p.133) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Lovely, inventive pop songs....Daniel Johns reaches for the stars on 'Tuna In The Brine', a Beach Boys-inspired showpiece of marked maturity." Mojo (Publisher) (9/02, p.95) - "...Silverchair have outgrown playing follow-the-leader." Silverchair Diorama Songs Diorama Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews What happened to the old Silverchair? I have to disagree with the comments made in the other reviews. I found Diorama thouroughly uninspiring and for the first time found myself flicking through a silverchair album after getting bored halfway through every track. This album has obviously gone down a commercial route which We had begun to see glimpses of with Neon Ballroom. Silverchair have lost their young exuberrance and raw guitar riffs. Long gone are the days when you could feel the passion in their songs such as the terric Israel's Son and Madman from Frogstomp. I found Diorama disappointing and long for the day when Silverchair go back to their old days and start playing with some emotion again. Sorry guys! I miss the old band A pleasant album, but may require some adjustment to the lack of gut-wrenching, haunting melodies that have thus far been Silverchair's trademark. But please, do not go by my assessment, as I am clearly in the minority on this one. Submitted by a reviewer (Mountain View, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Silverchair's diorama is the greatest evolution Silverchair always bests their last thats for sure. With Diorama, although different from their past albums, offers a new view in Daniels writing. His writing is more positive and enlightening, and like he says in the computer enhanced CD extra's he's not only writing in blacks and greys anymore, but in every colour. The songs are classics and real chair fan, will already be able to see the bands evolution from frogstomp, to freakshow, to neonballroom. I can only hope and wait to see when we will next see from this great band! Submitted by dianagwens (Toronto, Ont. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Rhino Records first attracted notice for its ability to assemble good, well-thought-out, best-of and greatest-hits compilations of acts who had enjoyed a chart placement (or two) without ever getting a proper hits package from their own labels; a little later Rhino started their "Very Best Of" series, which managed to be medium-weight but pretty thorough overviews of a lot of major acts (especially in R&B) from the past that needed a fresh look. But in 2000, when they released The Very Best of Deep Purple -- a band that needed no helping hand in the exposure area -- in conjunction with Warner Archives, that was something new for the company. And damned if Deep Purple and their fans, casual or serious, didn't benefit stunningly from Rhino's usual excellence on this CD. For one thing -- and this is pretty amazing -- this disc, with nearly 80-minutes of music, was the most thorough and thoughtful overview of the band's work ever released in the United States; EMI may have come close in England with Singles A's & B's but the sound here is better, to put it mildly. It's not just that Bill Inglot's tape research and engineering are very good -- it's that the sound here is so rich and resonant (as well as -- natch -- loud), that even original lead singer Rod Evans is finally shown at his best, doing what amounted to heavy metal "crooning" next to Ian Gillan's rock-god shrieks. ...

Diorama CD music
$16.05 Mike Keneally's growth as an artist has been a pretty amazing journey, from the manic enthusiasm of Hat through the sublime and subtle Wooden Smoke to the jaw-dropping brilliance of The Universe Will Provide. All the while, Keneally has continued to push himself as a creative person, and Dog shows him stretching still further. The biggest difference between Dog and Wooden Smoke, Keneally's previous album (obviously, an album written for orchestra is a different beast altogether), is that Dog just rocks. This is easily Keneally's most muscular recording to date, with snarling guitars all over the place, and the band just tears into the material. Even so, the production is nearly as detailed as Wooden Smoke, with successive ...
