| | Charlie Parker Burnin' Bird CD - Import Charlie Parker Discography of CDs
Recorded between 1944 & 1948. Includes liner notes by Kirk Silsbee.
This Savoy compilation features various recordings made by saxophonist Charlie Parker during the mid- to late- '40s. Most die-hard bebop fanatics will have these tracks on other discs, but neophytes should find Burnin' Bird useful. Included are such legendary recordings as "Koko," "Ornithology," and "Shaw 'Nuff" -- many of which feature other jazz icons like trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. While not definitive, Burnin' Bird competes well with similar single-disc Parker compilations. ~ Matt Collar
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Burnin' Bird album
$14.44 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once again ...

| | Ella Fitzgerald Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas CD (1960) Remastered
Burnin' Bird CD music
$7.85 ELLA FITZGERALD WISHES YOU A SWINGING CHRISTMAS is a charming, warmly humorous--and yes, swinging--set of classic Christmas tunes. The program is familiar, from bouncy singalongs like "Jingle Bells" to slinky ballads like a downright sexy "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," but Fitzgerald treats each song with exactly as much respect as it deserves. And so Frank Loesser's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" is wistfully romantic and Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne's "Let It Snow" is kittenishly enticing. As always, Norman Granz's production avoids the schlock that drowns some holiday sets. This is as good as jazz Christmas albums get.
This is a delightful Christmas jazz reissue featuring Ella Fitzgerald in prime form. On most selections she is backed by Frank DeVol's orchestra. The original ...
| | Ali Akbar Khan Traditional Music Of India CD (1995)
Burnin' Bird music CDs
$7.95 Along with Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan stands out as a musician whose work caused America and the West to pay attention to Indian classical in the 1960s. This disc combines two albums from 1965: Traditional Music of India and The Soul of Indian Music, both originally on Prestige. The re-release offers Michael Gold's informative and occasionally hilarious original liner notes as well. Akbar ...
| | SOS All-Stars New York Rendezvous CD (1988)
Burnin' Bird songs
$12.95 Fusion heroes drummer Dave Weckl, guitarist Barry Finnerty, bassist Marcus Miller, and the Brecker Brothers on one cut, help flesh out the lineup for this 1987 set of instrumental pop, jazz-rock, and light jazz tracks. Most are short with a steady backbeat, room for quick solos, and arrangements heavy on bombastic openings and frenetic conclusions. One exception to the rule is the nine-and-a-half minute "Mirage," a song with a two-trumpet/saxophone/trombone frontline, plus guest spots from Bob Baldwin on synthesizer and arrangements from guitarist Al Orlo and Baldwin. "The Three Sisters" has some solid sax work by Fred Vigdor ...
| | R E M Reveal CD (2001)
Burnin' Bird album
$24.29 While the preceding UP equaled Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, and Peter Buck spending their studio time painstakingly stitching songs together via multiple overdubs, REVEAL finds the Athens trio playing together in the studio along with hired guns Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies), and drummer Joey Waronker (Beck). In bouncing back from drummer Bill Berry's departure, the group has emerged with a warm-sounding record bubbling over with dreamy pop songs.
From the opening number "The Lifting," with its swirling textures, sparse piano, and Stipe's plainspoken enunciation, R.E.M. serve up heaping dollops of aural manna. Among the many highlights are the throbbing twang-and-strum of "All The Way To Reno (You're Gonna Be A Star)," which sounds like Mark Knopfler fronting The Flaming Lips, and the faux PET SOUNDS-outtake "Summer Turns To High" with its shimmering keyboards and Stipe's casual falsetto. Elsewhere, R.E.M. fuse Stax-flavored horns, swooping strings, and a cheap-sounding drum machine for the lighter-than-air "Beachball," and set off on a soaring flight of Rickenbacker guitar jangle soaked in strings and synths on "Imitation Of Life." REVEAL represents R.E.M's rebirth as a mellifluous pop engine.
Limited edition imported version of their 2001 studio album will be the exact same as the US pressing, which features a custom sleeve that measures 8 inches square, a 40 page full color booklet which ...

Burnin' Bird songs
$13.85 Oliver Lake had just celebrated his 61st birthday when, in September 2003, he finished recording Dat Love -- not exactly in his adolescence, but thankfully time hasn't robbed the saxophonist of either his chops or his risk-taking spirit. Lake is still open to trying new things, and this CD finds him leading an unusual group that has been billed as the Oliver Lake Steel Quartet since its formation in 1998. The group is so-named because it includes a steel pan player; the lineup consists of Lake on alto and soprano sax, Lyndon Achee on steel pan, Reggie Washington on electric bass, and Damon Duewhite on drums -- an unlikely combination of instruments, certainly, ...
