Gregorian Chants
$15.05 Yo-Yo Ma's holiday album SONGS OF JOY AND PEACE admirably aims to be all-inclusive by featuring songs from the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions, as well as feel-good popular favorites like "Here Comes the Sun" and "My Favorite Things." Guests include Diana Krall, James Taylor, Joshua Redman, Chris Botti, and Dave Brubeck, among others. The set ranges across religious traditions and styles, but a feeling of open-hearted warmth, along with Yo-Yo Ma's rich, swelling cello, provides the glue that binds this diverse group of musicians and songs.

| | Victory At Sea CD (1992)
Gregorian Chants
$9.99 The 1952 NBC series Victory at Sea was one of the earliest network documentary series to capture the public's imagination in a serious way, and one of the more enduring offshoots was the music by Richard Rodgers, which was recorded by RCA-Victor in what ultimately became a series of four LPs. Rodgers was chosen by series producer Henry Salamon based on his being the "leading American composer of his day," a somewhat exalted (though understandable) judgement for a man who was most closely associated with the Broadway stage and Hollywood. The albums were popular, probably due in part to the fact that the music was accessible and unchallenging, and that it insinuated itself for months into the household of seemingly every American family that had someone fighting in World War II -- and that a lot of veterans owned stereo systems in the late '50s, and these recordings took full advantage of stereo's two-channel sound separation. As to the music itself, one finds on listening to it 40+ years later that a little goes a long way. Rodgers devised a straightforward melodic score whose most inspired moments (such as the main title theme) seem to have been lifted from the early work of Ralph Vaughan Williams. An astonishing amount of what is on this CD (which runs 67 minutes) ...

| | Quartet San Francisco QSF Plays Brubeck CD (2009)
Gregorian Chants
$17.69 String quartets like Quartet San Francisco that play jazz compositions are challenging to label stylistically, as they are often putting their own stamp on the music, even if things seem tightly arranged. This CD focuses mostly on the works of jazz pianist/composer Dave Brubeck, including five of the seven songs from his best-selling album Time Out, though a few of the pieces have rarely been recorded by others. With Jeremy Cohen and Alisa Rose on violins, viola player Keith Lawrence, and cellist Michelle Djokic, they are similar in some ways to the Turtle Island String Quartet in their early years, though the QSF have remained in a jazz setting over time. Among the most intriguing tracks are the tense, train-like interpretation of "The Golden Horn" (premiered by Brubeck on Jazz Impressions of Eurasia) and the mournful "Bluette," while cellist Matthew Brubeck (the pianist's youngest son) ...
| | Vinnie Moore Time Odyssey CD (1988)
Gregorian Chants
$7.89 During the post-Van Halen shred eruption of the '80s, only a few guitarists made anything that resembled a unique musical statement. For every Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, there were a dozen Joey Tafollas. Perhaps the most groundbreaking musician of this era was Yngwie Malmsteen. The Swedish virtuoso had many imitators, and Vinnie Moore was chief among them. After a successful debut on shred-specialty label Shrapnel Records, Moore landed a deal with Mercury and released Time Odyssey at the height of solo rock guitar excess in 1988. On the disc's first two tracks, "Morning Star" and "Prelude/Into the Future," Moore ...
