Irene Papas, Jacqueline Bisset, James Fox, Kenneth Branagh, Lesley Manville, Sebastian Shaw - Director: Clare Peploe It's summer on a breathtakingly beautiful Greek island, which can only mean one thing--tourists. But as much as local photographer Katherine dreads the masses descending on her idyllic home, this year she has bigger problems. She's broke for starters; her best friend and mentor--a British art expert--may in fact be a Russian spy; her ex-husband is bedding leggy blonde tourists; and a shy Englishman on his second honeymoon is actually wooing her! A famous photographer, while vacationing with her daughter in Greece, gets involved with the exploits of her ex-husband and spies masquerading as tourists. Katharine is a talented photographer living on an idyllic Greek island. Unfortunately, the only thing that's clicking is her camera, until she finds herself surrounded by crazies, spies, smugglers, love-sick tourists, a teenage daughter and an ex-husband. Screen debut for actor/director Kenneth Branagh. He made two films in 1987, the other being "A Month in the Country." "High Season" was produced first.
The film is a Forever Films/Marlie Production.
Additional financing by the National Film Development Fund and British Screen Finance.
Additional cast: Geoffrey Rose (Thompson) and Paris Tselios (Yanni).

| | Billy Bathgate DVD (1991) Widescreen
High Season review
$6.89 E.L. Doctorow's acclaimed novel forms the basis of BILLY BATHGATE, which stars Loren Dean as the title character. In the New York of 1935, the naive Bronx-born teenager wangles his way into the gang of his hero, crime boss Dutch Schultz (Dustin Hoffman), as a gofer. Although the boy doesn't know it, Schultz is approaching the end of his storied career and the Feds are closing in, hoping to put him behind bars for income-tax evasion. The youth quickly learns about the endless violence, treachery, and double-crossing that characterize mob life, such as Schultz's cold-blooded execution of his former enforcer, Bo Weinberg (Bruce Willis). After Billy tips Dutch off about some traitorous activity in his organization, he moves up a couple of rungs and is soon entrusted with guarding the gangster's girlfriend, Drew Preston (Nicole Kidman). This proves to be something of a problem, since the beauty has a mind of her own and doesn't take anything from anybody, including Dutch. Worse still, Billy finds himself falling in love with her. Dean's pivotal performance strikes just the right balance between street-smart toughness and wide-eyed wonder, and the protean Hoffman adds his explosive portrait of the ruthless, beleaguered Schultz to his long list of unforgettable roles. Steven Hill also shines as Schultz's kindly, razor-sharp business adviser. The film features handsome, period-specific sets by Patrizia von Brandenstein and characteristically brilliant photography by legendary cinematographer Nestor Almendros (DAYS OF HEAVEN), in his last film.

| | Day For Night DVD (1973) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
High Season DVD
$16.09 François Truffaut's DAY FOR NIGHT is the French master's tender, humorous love letter to the cinema. Stepping in front of the camera, Truffaut plays Ferrand, a director who's embarking on his latest production, a melodrama entitled MEET PAMELA. As the cast and crew convene at the Victorine Studio in Nice, a family is formed, but unlike most families, this one is only temporary. There's the gorgeous American actress (Jacqueline Bisset), the love-struck young lead (Jean-Pierre Leaud), the aging alcoholic (Valentina Cortese), and the unheralded crew (grips, technicians, etc.). Along the way, those involved in the production start to feel as if the events in their real lives are coming straight out of the movies, filled with romance, tragedy, melodrama, and a dash of slapstick.
As with the best works of art, Truffaut's film doesn't exist merely to provide viewers with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the tumultuous craft of filmmaking. While Truffaut doesn't shy away from revealing some of cinema's most magical tricks--such as how action sequences are shot and how artificial snow is created--the film also works on a more universal level, addressing issues to which everyone can relate. But ultimately, the moviemaking sequences are what make DAY FOR NIGHT such an unforgettable experience.
