This sweet-voiced, independent, adult contemporary artist is aiming for a mix of Diana Krall's deep sensuality and Sade's lighthearted seduction, with a slight tip of the cap to Astrud Gilberto. Hardly a powerhouse, but sweetly endearing all the same, her high and gentle vocal approach finds her tackling standards in both a gentle, smooth jazz way ("Anyone Who Had a Heart") and also with a Brazilian lilt ("Walk on By"). The latter tune has a pleasant lead vocal but is most memorable for its gentle samba guitar line by Wayne Johnson and Hubert Laws' twirling flute solo. Aside from going down easy, Duboc's chances for success in the genre are helped by numerous smooth jazz elite like saxman Gerald Albright and keyboardist Jeff Lorber. Also impressive are her songwriting skills, although perhaps she shouldn't be so obvious about her ambitions to compete with Sade (one of her songs is "This Is No Ordinary Love"). Maybe the laid-back, restrained style will work in her favor, too. Marilyn Scott, however, doing similar type material and with a much stronger vocal presence, has been trying for years to establish herself in the format and has only gotten so far. ~ Jonathan Widran

Duboc album
$11.99 Songwriter, musician, and arranger Carol Duboc has penned songs for a variety of pop and R&B artists, ranging from Patti LaBelle to the Fine Young Cannibals to Tom Jones. On her debut album, With All That I Am, Duboc turns to jazz, the music that she loved as a child growing up in Kansas City. Duboc was educated at the University of Southern California in vocal performance, composition, and music engineering, and her experience in each of those areas is evident on this album. Her voice, which makes the most of her solid technique, never really accomplishes more than a dozen other jazz vocalists could, but while those other vocalists would prove their abilities singing standards, Duboc has crafted an album of original songs that manage to sound like standards themselves. With a pleasant infusion of Brazilian and Latin jazz styles, this album is one very well-balanced, pleasant concoction that seems on the surface to be fairly simple, yet never sounds thin or insubstantial. ~ Stacia Proefrock

| | Steve Cole Ny La CD (2003)
Duboc CD music
$9.29 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages to keep things organic and simple -- despite the use of programmed drum beats and synthesizers -- a lesson some of his contemporaries could learn. Also adding depth are the vocal tracks featuring the crisply soulful Mauli B., whose star-making performance on "Every Little Thing" is a highlight on this already stellar release. ~ Matt Collar
Returning to the pure smooth jazz vibe of his best-selling first album, saxman Steve Cole conquers the country with 'NY LA'. Soulfully rooted in richly textured R&B grooves, Cole has earned three #1 smooth jazz hits from his first two albums. Warner Brothers. 2003.
Personnel: Steve Cole (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, keyboards, bass synthesizer, drum programming); Mauli B. (vocals, background vocals); Charles Hines (vocals); Paul Jackson, Jr. , ...

| | George Benson Irreplaceable CD (2004)
Duboc songs
$11.35 In the public eye as a recording artist since the early 1960s, guitarist/vocalist George Benson is arguably the man who injected the "smooth" into smooth jazz. IRREPLACEABLE artfully treads the border between contemporary R&B and smooth jazz, thanks in no small part to producer/songwriter Joshua Paul Thompson. A couple of factors set the more mature Benson's work apart from the pack of teens and twentysomethings crowding the jazz-tinged R&B field. Benson takes his vocal cues from the classic models of Nat King Cole and Sam Cooke, with a healthy dash of Stevie Wonder, leaving the histrionics for others to negotiate at their own risk. But, of course, Benson most clearly puts his mark on the album with his sui generis fretwork. Certainly the tracks groove like great R&B should, but on the tunes "Take You Out," "Missing You," and the standard "Softly, as ...
| | Steve Oliver 3-D CD (2004)
Duboc album
$14.45 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." Joining all-star guests like Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason (who adds his gentle rhythmic touch to the lush romantic atmospheres of the title track) and saxophonist Eric Marienthal (soulful harmony on the lilting ballad "She's Got the Way-O," punchy riffs and call-and-response amidst the brass, retro-soul, and party-groove mania of "Funhouse") is a handful of musicians familiar to longtime fans of the Oliver live experience, including Will Donato (sax) and Larry Antonino (bass). It's fun in the sun (with a few romantic respites) from beginning to end, with the jumpy, brass-fired "Chips and Salsa" balanced by trippier pieces like "Magic World," which has a slight worldbeat sensibility. Oliver's growing as a vocalist, too, with three lead vocal tracks that are among his best. ...
| | Jeff Kashiwa Peace Of Mind CD (2004)
Duboc CD music
$12.39 Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely on the leader's melodic playing. While the music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful and Kashiwa plays well, no surprises occur and this set never rises above the level of pleasant background music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Duke Ellington Recollections Of The Big Band Era CD (1976)
Duboc songs
$13.95 Recorded in Chicago, Illinois on November 29, 1962 and in New York, New York between December 11, 1962 and January 3, 1963. Originally released on Atlantic (1665) and Reprise (6168).
Whether it was Duke's idea or the idea of a producer or record company executive seeking a "nostalgia" concept, the "concept" for this album is: the Duke does songs made famous by other big band leaders. Most of these tunes were originally done by his equally well-known contemporaries in the Swing Era--Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman--as well as those who are less known today: Erskine Hawkins, Harry James (an early influence on Miles Davis), Ben Bernie. Then there are the hits by less jazz-oriented leaders: Guy Lombardo, Wayne King, Fred Waring--the "easy-listening" bands of that time.
Included also are some choice numbers by modern leaders whom Ellington influenced, directly or not: Quincy Jones, Stan Kenton, Les Brown. It's a varied walk down memory lane, played with that trademark Ellington style--suave, sophisticated and swinging. A good way for one to get an overview of the big band era, circa 1930-60. As a bonus, there's a cover of a well-known tune by a composer Duke admired: George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."
These are Atlantic and Reprise label recordings.
Personnel: Duke Ellington (leader, arranger, piano); Billy Strayhorn (arranger, ...
| | Inside Betty Carter CD (1965)
Duboc album
$9.25 Betty Carter is the consummate jazz singer. Her phrasing is fearless and unique, drawing as its inspiration jazz instrumentalists in the bebop tradition. She uses her voice like a horn, spontaneously bending and stretching her notes. The key to Carter's unique artistry is rhythm and improvisation; she directs her trio through continuous dramatic shifts in tempo. Though much of her material consists of familiar jazz standards, she breaks each tune down to its most abstract form and proceeds from there.
INSIDE BETTY CARTER finds Carter fully matured stylistically, and in full command of her singular artistic powers. The cuts feature Carter and her trio and contain such memorable tracks as "My Favorite Things," taken at a breakneck tempo, and an absolutely exquisite version of "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," as well as an extremely compelling original tune with a Latin feel, "Open the Door." The CD also includes some previously ...
