Rumpole Of The Bailey - The Complete First And Second Seasons Video Rumpole Of The Bailey - The Complete First And Second Seasons Movie Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) A Feat for Rumpole Fans John Mortimor's "Rumpole of the Bailey" developed a large follwing here in the US when it was aired for several consecutive seasons on PBS's Mystery. So much so, in fact, that Mortimor said he was was surprized. A look at these DVDs which contain the entire first and second season's broadcasts tell us that he shouldn't have been. Peopled by a wonderful cast of charactors - - and that is really the word for them! -- RofB takes the viewer into a delightful world where the written law is in constant tension with the law of human nature. And there to make of order of it all is Rompole, a crusty old barristor played by the late Keo McKern as if he were born for just the role. Even more than in the later years these early stories have an edge to their humor as they confront some serious issues where there is no simple non-idealogical answer to what is "right" and "wrong." Highly recommended! Submitted by dsucher (Peterborough, NH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Intelligent English humor at its best ! Leo McKern makes this my favorite British comedy series ! Not that Jeeves and Wooster, The Irish RM or Faulty Towers are not enjoyable and funny. The depth of Rumpoles character, however, his rasping condemnations and his poetic soliloquys, make this the best comedy-drama that I have ever seen. There may be more of this quality but they have not to my knowledge made it across the ditch. Rumpole's musings on topics from life to death are inspired. McKern is in his mid 80's now, but I still dream of more episodes, "She who must be obeyed"- one more time please. Submitted by a reviewer (Memphis, Tennessee) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of my all time favorites I came to love Rumpole after watching it on PBS, and was glad when they finally started releasing the DVD's. I've got all seven seasons, and am currently about half way through them.
It's a bit of drama, a bit of comedy, and a whole lot of just plain brilliant television! Submitted by Reginald Pither (east coast, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
