Carol Speed, Don Gordon, Max Julien, Richard Pryor, Roger E. Mosley, William Watson - Director: Michael Campus Released from prison after five years, The Mack (Max Julien) is back and ready to reclaim the city's streets. With his partner, Slim (Richard Pryor), and his brother (Roger E. Mosley) on his side, they've got the skills to do what the police won't--take on the pushers and fight to clean up the neighborhood. Raw and unflinching, "The Mack" delivers hard-hitting action with an urban flavor. Goldie's a cutthroat, penny-pinching black businessman, eager to climb to the top of his profession. Just because he's a pimp doesn't mean he wants any less than the very best cars, clothes and women. But when he finally gets what he wants, he'll have more than he bargained for: white detectives, crooked cops and other pushy pimps moving in on him. Goldie's top Mack now, but he may not be for long. A black pimp in Oakland decides that it's high time to clean up the streets, so he initiates a campaign of violence. Max Julien stars as the eponymous Mack, a fast-talking, smooth hustler who has just been released from prison. With his trusty brother (Roger E. Mosley) and witty sidekick Slim (legendary comedian Richard Pryor), Mack is armed to clean up the streets. This action-packed crime caper also gives a searing yet fun look into urban street life. Additional cast members include: Paul Harris, Kal Hernancdez, Annazette Chase, Junero Jennings, Lee Duncan, Stu Gilliam, Sandra Brown, Christopher Brooks, Fritz Ford, John Vick, Norman McClure and David Mauro. Mack Reviews: "...The film's crackling dialogue and pimp politics have been recycled by everyone from Dr. Dre to the Wu-Tang Clan..."

Talk about Pimpin... I don't know what to say except for the fact that this movie has been sampled by alot of hip hop artist of today and yesterday. Although the film has quite few familar faces, it's something that you might want to consider for your DVD collection, the clothes and movie lines are hillarious and don't get me started on the automobiles. This is a must have movie for all african-american movie fans. If you wanta laugh.... This is the movie to laugh about. Submitted by ubiquity73 (Glendale, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Dolemite DVD (1975) Widescreen
Mack review
$8.75 Legendary comedian and rap forefather Rudy Ray Moore turns in a dynamic and hilarious performance as the meanest, rhyme-spouting mack of them all in this revered underground spoof of 70s blaxploitation flicks. After being framed by some evil white cops, Dolemite emerges from the slammer ready for revenge with his old friends (including Queen Bee and her loyal pleasure girls) rallied behind him. But this is no NAKED GUN style send-up- it's played straight, which is why it's stood the test of time. Followed by THE HUMAN TORNADO (aka DOLEMITE 2).

Director Michael Schultz follows up his critically acclaimed and commercially successful COOLEY HIGH with this hilarious day-in-the-life tale set in modern day Los Angeles. At Sully Boyar's car wash, a juvenile, motley crew of city dwellers "work their fingers to the bone" waiting on the eccentric and sometimes haughty clientele. Throughout the day, the young men find time to indulge in personal pursuits: one fellow fantasizes about the pretty waitress working at a local restaurant, a militant preaches politics, while more disgruntled workers find a way to justify their laziness. As the day wears on, the many levels of oppression that control each individual's lives gradually become apparent. Luckily, Schultz and screenwriter Joel Schumacher don't dwell on the potentially depressing aspects of their subject matter; proving that sometimes laughter is the best medicine, they stuff their film with enough verbal, visual, and situational humor to keep the audience laughing throughout. This can also be attributed to the performances by the all-star ensemble of performers, including Franklin Ajaye, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Bill Duke, and Garrett Morris. Cementing the deal is the film's soundtrack, which features the soulful music of diva Rose Royce.

| | Superfly DVD (1972) Widescreen
Mack video
$8.79 SUPERFLY, along with COFFY and SHAFT, completes Blaxploitations's best known
triumvirate. One of the highest-grossing pictures of 1972, SUPERFLY became an instant classic, and established director Gordon Parks firmly in Warner Brothers' sights to make THREE THE HARD WAY in 1974. Parks was one of the first African American directors to get financing from a major Hollywood studio to make the 1969 film THE LEARNING TREE.
Super Fly is a cocaine dealer who begins to realize that his life will soon end with either prison or his death. He decides to build an escape from the life by making his biggest deal yet, converting the coke to cash and running off to start a new life. The problem is that the Mob does not have a retirement plan and will give him a choice of staying and selling for them or dying if they find out his intentions. With a terrific score by Curtis Mayfield and a star wearing threads to match, SUPERFLY is chock full of the sass, flash, and action Blaxploitation is known for.

$9.85 Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Clyde and Billy come up with a hair-brained scheme to raise money for a new lodge hall by fixing a boxing match. Their plan is to hypnotize a weakling boxer and make him think he's unbeatable. Then they'll place bets on his "sure-win" fights. Their idea is so crazy that it just might work. But if anyone finds out what they're up to, there will be hell to pay.
Unusual names like "Biggie Smalls" (Calvin Lockhart), "Kansas City Mack" (John Amos), "Bootney Farnsworth" (Jimmie Walker), and "Fish an' Chips Freddie" (Morgan Roberts) add to the comic value of the film's line-up of characters.
Cosby, with his usual raucous antics, is a perfect complement to Poitier's understated humor. Curtis Mayfield's music creates the right funky atmosphere for this film.
