Performers include: Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez, Karin Krog, Archie Shepp, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Hal Golper. Personnel: Karin Krog (vocals); Harold Land, Archie Shepp (tenor saxophone); Dave Burrell, Hal Galper, Bill Evans (piano); Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone); Tony Oxley (drums). Recording information: Festival Ljubijana, Yugoslavia (1970-1973). Photographer: Sepp Werkmeister. This very interesting CD contains four unrelated performances from three editions of Yugoslavia's Ljublijana Jazz Festival. The Bill Evans Trio (with bassist Eddie Gomez and a slightly out-of-place Tony Oxley on drums) plays "Nardis," "'Round Midnight" is explored by the duo of Karin Krog (who half-speaks her vocal) and bassist Arild Andersen, tenor-saxophonist Archie Shepp and his quintet romp through the uptempo blues "Sonny's Back" in fairly straightahead if ragged fashion and, best of all, the 1970 Bobby Hutcherson-Harold Land quintet explores an original in 7/8; Land in particular is outstanding. This CD offers listeners four examples of the jazz modern mainstream of the early '70s. ~ Scott Yanow Live At The Festival Music Live At The Festival Songs | 1. | Nardis |

Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy ...

Live At The Festival
$18.99 The DUE WEST TRIO combines talent and years of experience to provide the best in traditional Western musical entertainment.Brought together in 1994 through family reunions and friendships, the DUE WEST TRIO combines outstanding instrumentation and vocals to perform music as at home on a venue stage as around a campfire. Theirs is not “country” or dance music but rather rich harmonies harkening back to years gone by of the moonlit trails of the American West. The Trio is often joined on stage by their good friend and award-winning fiddler, Tim O’Connor. They are members of the Academy of Western Artists and one of its 2003 nominees for Western Music: Duo/Group. They have released two compact discs to favorable reviews.Rena Randall is a fifth generation Tucsonan married to a fifth generation Arizonan! She traveled the rodeo circuit with her parents as a child and is now a wife, mother, horsewoman and musician. On stage, Rena plays tenor guitar and three-string and mountain dulcimer. In addition to being a fine songwriter, her vocal abilities and soaring range captivate lovers of western music. That “pretty voice” has caused Rusty Richards, former member of the legendary Sons of the Pioneers to declare, “I have definitely become a fan”. David Gibson, also a fifth generation Arizonan was raised in Tucson. His great grandfather ...
| | Fred Band Hess In The Grotto CD (2007)
Live At The Festival
$18.99 A major strength of the sound is the arranging—voices slipping in and out, brief unison sections loosening into overlapping conversations built around spirited soloing. And nobody solos like Hess—each turn he takes glows and flashes like a dark-hued, asymmetrically-cut diamond. Indeed, nobody makes music like Fred Hess. He has developed a truly original sound.Dan McClenaghan-allaboutjazz.comHess is a compelling stylist; his breathy old school tone softens his modernist angular phrasing. Miles lends a mellifluously abstract edge to the quintet; his solos on the title track and “Ninth House” are expressively fragile in their thematically rigorous beauty. Newcomer Gunther plays with brio and verve, dueling with Hess on a number of invigorating encounters. His acerbic alto solos on “Simple Steps” and “Alison's Dream” are electrifying jolts on a record filled with highlights.Efficiently blending classic hard bop swing and Third Stream ambience with fiery improvisation and experimental structures, In The Grotto is Hess' most expansive statement to date.Troy Collins-allaboutjazz.comBorn in Abington, Pennsylvania, Hess grew up in New Jersey, attending Trenton State College, before moving to Colorado in 1981. He graduated with a doctorate in music composition from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1991. His early experiences include studies with saxophonist Phil Woods, a stint with bandleader Fred Waring, and composing music for the world premiere of a Sam Shepard play. As a composer, his influences encompass the contributions of the great figures in jazz history, avant-garde classical sources, as well as Anthony Braxton and the members of the AACM. He is currently Director of Composition at The Metropolitan ...
