The latest release from Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu immediately following upon the success of his work on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack for Disney. The music presented here is based mostly upon the hula and mele chanting of the old traditions of Hawaii, but there are differences to be found throughout. This isn't exactly traditional hula chant, but rather hula chant as doctored and conceived in the mind of Keali'i Ho'omalu. There's a more definite focus on the progressive end of music, as bits and pieces of grooves wander in through the use of the pahu drums in non-traditional ways. The addition of a few string players adds in another dimension on some songs, giving an almost Spanish flair to the work. In large part though, the album is dominated by Ho'omalu's chant, accompanied capably by a suitable groove on the pahu drum, and a small chorus of chanters responding from time to time. Hula chant itself is a powerful medium, but not always musical beyond the rhythms of the chanter. Here, it's given a melody and a deeper rhythmic structure, as well as some occasional instrumentation. It's not traditional, but it's steeped in tradition nonetheless. It's an entirely interesting twist on a semi-austere tradition of music, and demands at least one listen. For curious fans of Hawaiian music, this is certainly an album to give a shot. ~ Adam Greenberg

| Call It What You Like Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Beyond Wonderful! This is a fabulous CD. If you're on the fence about buying it- just do it. It's worth it! Submitted by cassmercer (Auburn, NH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Worth 10 stars As a hula instructor of chidren whose only knowledge of hula and things Hawai'ian, Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu's music and love for our 'Aina and Our Culture comes through in his music and his dance. This man, his music and all he has to offer the world is so much more than only a Disney movie. He is by far the new voice of people who are very proud of who we are and where we are all from. In his words, "we must all malama pono." MKH does Submitted by R. Mapuana Cottell, Hula i Lalo Ka La (Helendale, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Truly Wonderful This is a truly wonderful album, absolutely fantastic. Rich, powerful vocals drive the songs. Mark takes the traditional Hawaiian forms and puts some new spin on them, while still (in my opinion at least) staying true to core "hula mele".
I've also found that our infant calms down when he hears the songs. Combination hula and lullaby. :-)
The hidden track is a thoughtful reflection on aspects of Hawaiian philosophy and religion, put to an engaging back beat. A pleasant surprise.
Overall I highly recommend it, even if you're not a fan of traditional Hawaiian songs/chants.
A hui hou kakou,
-Joe
