| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Cookin' With Some Barbeque music CDs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, ...

| | Herb Alpert S.R.O. CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
Cookin' With Some Barbeque CD music
$9.99 By late 1966, it seemed as if every TV commercial and every pop arranger had latched onto the Herb Alpert "Ameriachi" sound -- at which point the resourceful originator of that sound began to pare it down and loosen it up a bit. S.R.O. (Standing Room Only), referring to the Tijuana Brass' string of sold-out concerts, is an accurate title, for this LP is about a seven-piece band loaded with experienced jazzers who groove and swing together to a greater degree than on their previous albums. Sure, the arrangements are very tightly knit and don't allow much room for spontaneity, but they still sound fresh and uninhibited, and Alpert often allows the flavor of jazz to come through more clearly. Indeed, two of the album's three hit singles, "The Work Song" and "Flamingo," are jazz tunes -- the former nervous and driving, the latter joyously kicking -- and the third, "Mame," gets a nifty Dixieland treatment a la Louis Armstrong, with Alpert singing one verse. The sleeping gem of the record is guitarist John Pisano's "Freight Train Joe," a wistfully evocative tune that won't quit the memory, and the mournful Alpert/Pisano/Nick Ceroli tune "For Carlos" later became Wes Montgomery's "Wind Song." Though S.R.O. only went to number two on the LP charts, Alpert's ...
| | Louis Armstrong In Concert, 1954 CD (1994) (Import) Denmark
Cookin' With Some Barbeque music CDs
$31.55 Louis Armstrong & His All Stars include: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Velma Middleton (vocals); Trummy Young (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Billy Kyle (piano); Arvell Shaw, Milt Hinton (bass); Barrett Deems, Kenny Jones (drums).
Recorded live in San Francisco, California in 1954. Includes liner notes by
Not as widely available as other recordings from Louis Armstrong and his All Stars, this disc is well worth the search, as it includes some of the most rollicking music ever recorded by this always-excellent lineup. Side one is a live San Francisco show from New Year's Eve, 1954. From the wildly enthusiastic crowd roar that accompanies the band's opening notes, the album never lets up, continuing all the way though a second San Francisco show three weeks later. The ...
| | Latin Oldies Vol. 1 CD (1996)
Cookin' With Some Barbeque songs
$12.75 Also available as part of a three CD box set with LATIN OLDIES VOLUME 2 and LATIN OLDIES VOLUME 3.
Current urban rap and R&B music rightfully acknowledge '70s Latin rock & roll on a constant basis. Mainly through sampling -- which, thank god, pays royalties to the original artists -- you usually get to hear snippets and backing tracks. Thump Records has been reissuing these original records by the original artists for several ...

| | George Braith Extension CD (1965) Japan; 24 Bit Remastered; Mini LP Sleeve
Cookin' With Some Barbeque music CDs
$35.59 This album from jazz saxophonist George Braith includes "Sweetville" and "Nut City."
The Japanese import comes in a paper sleeve preserving the original artwork.
Pushing to the side the double sax that became his trademark, George Braith turned in his strongest record with Extension. Largely freed from the restraints of the dueling horns, Braith is able to explore the outer reaches of his music. He still remains grounded in soul-jazz -- any guitar-organ combo is bound to have soul-jazz roots -- but he pushes the music toward adventurous hard bop, often with rewarding results. His compositions are fully realized, with interesting melodic statements and plenty of opportunities ...

$24.45 This 26-track collection presents many of the finest songs by the 1960s U.K. pop singer Sandie Shaw.
