| | Enigma Posteriori CD (2006)
Hand In Hand
$11.39 Released in 2006, Enigma's sixth album, A POSTERIORI, stays in the same techno-tinged vein of its predecessor, VOYAGEUR. On these 12 songs, sonic architect Michael Cretu focuses on synth-heavy grooves more than on New Age atmospherics, resulting in one of Enigma's more dance-oriented outings. Stand-out ...
| | B-Tribe 5 CD (2003)
Hand In Hand
$11.55 Indispensable global fusion music from Claus Zundel (AKA "The Brave"), this fifth outing (hence the title) finds the reclusive Spanish wizard stepping back and letting the virtuosic flamenco guitar of fellow Ibiza resident Paco Fernandez take center stage. Also on board is the African singer Luna Mohamed, who lends exotic vocal caresses to several tracks, and the mournful cello of Eric Plummetaz. As with previous B-Tribe work, the songs flow seamlessly together in a delirious blend of Gypsy camp romance and chill-out electronica. The centerpiece here is the haunting "Ode to Dolores ...

| | Mary Fahl Other Side Of Time CD (2003)
Hand In Hand
$9.09 Mary Fahl made good music as the singer for the eclectic October Project. She was always a surprise, looking so delicate but having such a big, almost classical voice. She still has the big voice, but she's opting for an easier course of being eclectic by tossing faint nods at different styles while trying to hew firmly to the center of the road; she's sort of a thinking man's Celine Dion with rootsy touches. Is she successful? Well, the fact that two of these pieces have already appeared in movie soundtracks means yes. "Going Home" is fake Irish, with by-the-numbers chord changes and a violin solo from Mark O'Connor that he could probably knock off in his sleep. There's plenty of piano, and a fair bit of orchestral (or keyboard) swell on the songs, and the type of singing that passes for passion without ever having a whole lot of depth "Ben Aindi Habibi" does at least try to be different, but even that is diluted from its Middle Eastern origins. At one time Mary Fahl was fantastic. Now she seems to be going where the money might be. But maybe you can't blame her; the bills have to be paid. This just ends up seeming like a bland waste of a mighty talent. ~ Chris Nickson

| | Nils Petter Molvaer Solid Ether CD (2001)
Hand In Hand
$15.55 Like 1998's Khmer, Solid Ether is an unusual addition to the ECM catalog, reflecting the Norwegian trumpeter's continued fascination with drum'n'bass, jungle, and other underground club genres. Molvaer's work in this idiom is indicative of a new wave sweeping Europe and Scandinavia, where boundaries between jazz and electronica are being creatively blurred by a growing number of forward-thinking artists. (The trend is catching on in the States as well.) Molvaer's trumpet is consistently in the forefront, as is the case in the music of his French contemporary, Erik Truffaz. This will inevitably prompt comparisons with Miles Davis, and Molvaer indeed credits Davis as a major influence in his musical development. The music on this record, however, sounds nothing like Davis ever played nor could have foreseen. (That said, in all likelihood he would have heartily approved.) With its driving beats, spare-to-barren harmonies, and dense atmospherics and samples, Solid Ether breaks completely with traditional notions of jazz performance. Most of its tracks segue directly from one to the next, creating a seamless "mix" in the style of much experimental dance music. While ten guest ...

| | Emmett Peixoto Under Roses CD (2009)
Hand In Hand
$16.45 Born in Watsonville, California in 1982, Emmett Peixoto (Pronounced Peh-shote) didn't wait long to start making music. At the ripe old age of five he began studying the piano. Emmett's older brother Seth Dean and his friends were constantly influencing young Emmett with many genres of music from old school Hip Hop to Classical and everything in between. At the age of eighteen Emmett began listening to artists such as Dylan and Cobain and soon after picked up the guitar and quickly began writing songs. His talent as a songwriter, composer and a singer began to blossom almost immediately. Emmett has a natural ability to weave intricately poetic lyrics that evoke a palpable imagery in the listener's mind into well crafted melodic rhythms. His ability was recognized by a lifelong friend of his older brother named Jeff Hayashi, a guitarist of 20+ years who at the time was working on his own musical endeavors. He and Jeff began to collaborate and it was realized that Emmet's music absolutely had to be recorded. They began recording demos on Emmett's laptop in a makeshift isolation booth made out of a coat closet. These early recordings are affectionately referred to as "The Minuscule Studio Sessions". Shortly ...
