Whirling album
$9.44 Here is an overlooked gem from a most unlikely source, recorded in a most unlikely genre -- commercial '70s jazz/funk -- just as the disco era was gathering steam. Tom Scott controlled the production, with Severinsen overdubbing all of the brass choruses and occasionally passing his horns through a phase shifter and wah-wah pedal. The coterie of overworked sessionmen from L.A. and NYC -- Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Lee Ritenour, Anthony Jackson, Ralph MacDonald, ...

Whirling album
$18.19 As a document of obscure, rare, and sometimes never recorded instrumental music (vocals on this date were omitted) of Louis Armstrong & Bix Beiderbecke, Sandke, his New York All Star bands of various sized personnel, and producer George Avakian, have gone to great pains to excavate these 15 gems. The historical aspect alone elevates the cachet of this marvelously musical, Dixieland-to-swing traditional jazz CD. Most of the cuts are large ensembles with the core musicians consisting of pianist Dick Hyman, tuba player David Ostwald, guitarist/banjoist James Chirillo or Howard Alden, bassists Peter Washington or Greg Cohen, drummer Joe Ascione, saxophonists/clarinetists Kenny Davern, Ken Peplowski, Chuck Wilson, and Scott Robinson, trombonists Wycliffe Gordon or Dan Barrett, and trumpeters Sandke, Jon-Erik Kellso, and Nicholas Payton. Avakian knows a ton of historical background which is written in his liners, and also includes reproductions of some of the charts.
The eight tunes from Satchmo range from the extraordinarily easy swinger "Beyond The Shadow Of A Doubt," the nine piece big band styled "The Jive Don't Come From Kokomo," "Tuxedo Junction" type "Mr. Jackson From Jacksonville," and two beat medley "Got What It Takes/Need Your Kind Of Lovin'" with tail draggin' mid-section and warm Wycliffe Gordon solo. Hyman's honky tonk stylings with Chirillo's banjo informs "Drop That Sack" and Payton solos expertly in this multi-generational line-up. Precious oompah tuba and Dixieland counterpoint electrify "Papa, What Are You Trying to Do to Me, I've Been Doing It For Years," evoking a modern octet re-creation of the King Oliver sound, while the old timey midtempo two beat "When You Leave Me Alone to Pine" sports a joyous solo from Kellso. Davern solos on these three tunes and continues to demonstrate why he is the premier clarinetist of his, or any, generation. A trumpet-piano duet from the leader and Hyman on "Weather Bird" generates plenty of energy. Of the Bix bits, a different nonet with Peplowski, Robinson, Barrett, Wilson and Alden where they cook in similar fashion to "There'll Be Some Changes Made" on the hot jazz epic "Stampede" with three solos by the leader, burning bass sax from Robinson, or Peplowski's lilting clarinet on Jean Goldkette's "Lily." More effortlessly swung is the cornet (Sandke) and clarinet (Peplowski) led, celeste flavored "Cloudy," steadily streamed Goldkette number "Play It Red," and Hyman-powered, cool to lukewarm, second to third gear shifted "No One Knows What It's All About." It's ...

$18.05 The chamber rock-cum-avant-garde ensemble Art Zoyd had a studio in Mons. The contemporary Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles was based in Maubeuge, just across the Franco-Belgian border. When musical directors Gérard Hourbette and Jean-Paul Dessy decided to work together they formed the Centre Transfrontalier de Production et Création Musicales and began to welcome composers in residence. Expériences de Vol is a triple-CD set of recordings featuring both ensembles performing works composed for this project by a wide array of artists ranging from contemporary composers to names more usually associated with the electronica scene. An Art Zoyd album this is not; instead what you get is a strong collection of challenging works. Some stay too close to the academic sphere to light up any sparks, although Kasper T. Toeplitz's "Biel" is delightfully minimalist and Christophe Jean Feldhandler and Dessy's pieces contain some beautiful moments. Gérard Hourbette and -- surprisingly -- David Shea provide the most Art Zoyd-sounding moments. Atau Tanaka and Ryoji Ikeda are the two unknown variables here, concert music not being known as their forte. They turn in impressive contributions. Tanaka makes extensive use of Laurent Dailleau's mastery of the theremin. Ikeda's "Opus 1" features a peaceful section of long string chords, unlike anything else he has done before. The stated intent of bringing together the worlds of acoustic and electronic contemporary music may not be completely successful, but the project has left in its wake interesting results. ~ François Couture
2006 repress of this 2002 release, not previously distributed in the US. Legendary French avant-garde weird symphonic rock/prog group Art Zoyd asked thirteen composers around the world to create a piece for Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles -- directed by Jean-Paul Dessy (but founded by Henri Pousseur in 1962). For the realization of this project, many forces were necessary: two regions between two countries -- Belgium and France -- two ensembles -- Musiques Nouvelles (20 musicians) and Art Zoyd (6 musicians) and their high-tech studios -- and two years of work. Each piece on this compilation explores the essential framework ...
