Teddy Buckner Salute to Louis Armstrong CD (1958)
Fascinating Rhythm: A Tribute To The Musical Genius Of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, And Richard Rogers, Volume 1 album for sale Teddy Buckner, a fine technical player who spent his life emulating Louis Armstrong in Dixieland settings, logically pays tribute to Satch on this enjoyable set. Mainly using a sextet that also features trombonist John "Streamling" Ewing and clarinetist Joe Darensbourg, Buckner jams through 18 songs that Armstrong recorded in the 1920s and '30s and generally avoids Armstrong's later hits. Buckner does a fine job of interpreting such tunes as "My Monday Date," "Potato Head Blues," "High Society," and "Big Butter and Egg Man." This album will particularly satisfy Dixieland fans. ~ Scott Yanow

Hank Jones Piano Playhouse CD (1979)
Fascinating Rhythm: A Tribute To The Musical Genius Of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, And Richard Rogers, Volume 1 buy CD music John Lewis and Hank Jones recorded a handful of duo piano albums during their careers and this 1979 studio session marks their final meeting, although the cover photo gives the impression that it is a concert. Issued as a direct-to-disc LP by Toshiba-EMI in Japan, the program is dominated by Lewis' originals, with bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne added on four of the six tracks. Lewis and Jones are heard as a duo in the elegant "P.O.V." and a relaxed interpretation of "All the Things You Are." Each pianist also has a solo feature with the rhythm section; Jones offers an easygoing take of "Oh, Look at Me Now," while Lewis includes his playful "Sacha's March." Perhaps the most unusual track is Lewis' "Marchin'," which he composed as a part of his score for a Broadway musical about Mahalia Jackson and also served as the theme song to the duo's series of concerts in Japan during their 1979 tour. Since this limited-edition LP was only issued in Japan, it will not be particularly easy to acquire. ~ Ken Dryden

Jon Nagourney Quartet Song for Marion CD (1994)
Fascinating Rhythm: A Tribute To The Musical Genius Of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, And Richard Rogers, Volume 1 CD music " A Song For Marion" is a jazz CD containig 11 songs of which 5 are recognizable standards, 4 jazz classics from the pens of Horace Silver, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. The 3 other pieces are from the great pianist Kenny Barron and 2 by Jon Nagourney. The CD "A Song For Marion" is enhanced by the wounderful talents of pianist Kenny Barron, bassist John Clayton and on drums Dick Berk. The recording and mastering was done by Jim Mooney, a legendary figure in producing the finest quality of jazz music for the past 40 years. the total running time of this CD is just over 67 minutes. Dick Berk And Jon Nagourney have been long time jazz mates since the early 80's. Besides this CD they also recorded "Big Jake" and "The Rare One" on the Discovery label. Dick's group, "The Jazz Adoption Agency" was one of the hottest jazz group around at the time. "A Song For Marion" receives air time on KLON, the nations best jazz radio staion around, frequently played by Chuck Niles and Sam Feilds. Jon Nagourney has been playing the vibes since 1982. He has worked on cruis ships from Canada to the Caribbean. He also plays in Hawaii, Las Vages, the south of France, Portland Orgon. He also Plays at many jazz venus in Los Angeles such as "Jazz Bakery", "Catalina Bar and Grill", and the now defunct "Carmelos and Dontes." Presently teaching improvison, and is the author of 7 jazz books with emphasis of more than 1,500 transcribed songs and solos from the masters of the jazz idioms. Hank's Mobely and Jones and Sonny Clark are at the top Of Nagourney's main influences. He has over 500 Hank Jones solos and 100 solos each of Mobley and Clark. It should be said though his improve teachings works for all instruments (except drums and vocals) and has been fortunate to have had students playing professionaly and making a living in the music business. Kenny Barron is a musicain of termendos talent. Not only a great improviser and accompanist, Kenny is probably the most sought after pianist around. He has been on at leat 300 albums lending his graet piano skills to everyone. Check out his solo on his "Tragic Magic". A true gentalmen, Kenny helped make this CD one Enjoyable Experience For the Players as well as the listenign public. John Clayton, the great jazz bassist has also been on hundreds of recordings, both as a sideman and in his own, Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra projects. John has a real swinging and supportive style. Check out his work on the vibe-bass duo of "Deep in a Dream". Dick Berk as well has been on many recordings, playing with Cal Tjader to Billie Holiday to Milt Jackson, as well as most giants in jazz. His har driving swinging drums always ingnites what ever setting he's on. So we hope you enjoy this CD it was alot of fun to make... even more fun to listen to.
Jon Nagourney had a flurry of activity recording as a leader from the late '80s into the mid-'90s, with three CDs for Albert Marx-owned labels. This outing was his second release, a studio date with pianist Kenny Barron, bassist John Clayton, and drummer Dick Berk. The vibraphonist chose a suitable program, including a few songs that were infrequently recorded, such as Horace Silver's "The Back Beat" and the upbeat "This Time the Dream's on Me." The quartet also delves into familiar territory like "Lazy Bird" and "Confirmation" with gusto. The leader's two originals are enjoyable, including the laid-back Latin-flavored "A Song for Marion" and the perky blues line "Snags on the Line." Barron contributed "Tragic Magic," a driving work that features him prominently. Nagourney's relatively soft touch on his instrument is buoyed by Barron's inventive accompaniment. Sadly, all of Jon Nagourney's work for Trend and Discovery disappeared from print with the demise of the two labels following the death of Albert Marx. ~ Ken Dryden
Personnel: Jon Nagourney (vibraphone).
