Thousand Leaves album for sale Product Description
Thousand Leaves album for sale by Sonic Youth was released May 19, 1998 on the Syrinx label. On long tracks like "Wildflower Soul," "Hits of Sunshine (for Allen Ginsberg)," and "Karen Koltrane," the interplay between guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo leads the songs into elaborate and inspired instrumental passages that recall the group's late '80s heyday. As usual, Moore, Ranaldo, and Kim Gordon split up the vocal duties, but this time Kim's singing is gruffer, almost a bark on "The Ineffable Me," while Thurston sounds breathier and more relaxed than ever on "Snare, Girl." Recorded entirely at the band's own studio, A THOUSAND LEAVES feels carefully constructed and produced while still immediate. ...See Full Description

| very good Picking up where Washing Machine left off, Sonic youth find themselves exploring instrumental territories. It may not be as impressive as what they did in Diamond Sea, but A Thousand Leaves still holds excellent songs like "Hoarfrost" "..Allan Gingsberg " just flowing beautifully despite their simplicity. Furthermore, the bands research in sound seems to be more focused on resonance rather than chaos with overlapping guitar patterns such as in "Wildflower Soul" or "Karen Coltrane" and vibrating feedback in "Female Mechanic", thus less distortion or other "usual" Sonic Youth sound. Hadn't it been for a few inaudible tracks partly due to Kim Gordon's bad singing and lack of originality in melodies, I would have given A Thousand Leaves five stars. | best album! This album entrances me with Renaldo's and Moore's guitar playing. Kim's voice is spellbounding. This album just works. This has been my favorite album since it came out. If you like this album, definitely check out Kim's "Free Kitten-Sentimental Education", it has some amazing stuff by kim and her girls and DJ Spooky. 6/23/99 By mattunder (Marion,MASS) This review is for a different format. |
| SY at their most free-spirited Released in 1998, A Thousand Leaves is an album continuing in the same style that Sonic Youth established with Washing Machine. Featuring songs with long running times and plenty of feedback-drenched guitar distortion, the album also showcases a softer (not necessarily poppier) side of the band in songs like "Sunday" and . It is an album very influenced by psychadelic and prog bands of the 60s/early 70s, so fans of Pink Floyd, Hendrix, and King Crimson would do well to listen to this one. That having been said, the songwriting on the album showcases both variety and consistently listenable quality, which makes A Thousand Leaves another SY release worth many listens. It wasn't as revolutionary as Goo or Dirty, but due to its more unconventional, free-flowing sound, A Thousand Leaves ranks as one of Sonic Youth's best albums of the 1990s.
