World Of Guitars
$13.95 When Island Records released the double-LP soundtrack to Countryman in the spring of 1982, ten years after the appearance of The Harder They Come, it was easy to see that company founder Chris Blackwell was looking to do for the current state of reggae what he had done before, i.e., promote it via a various-artists sampler that happened to have a cinematic tie-in. In this case, the movie itself was nowhere to be found, not even at the college campus midnight showings that had given birth to the cult following ...
| | Patrick O'Hearn Glaciation CD (2007)
World Of Guitars
$12.39 Patrick O’Hearn: Glaciation (self-released)It’s been awhile since a disc of ethereal, slow-moving instrumental music (this once would have been called “new age”) has captured my imagination like Patrick O’Hearn’s Glaciation has. Like the glaciers and icebergs that adorn the lovely CD package, these compositions have a spare, mysterious, other-worldly beauty. I mean to pay this release a high compliment when I note that some of this music recalls the most evocative work of Brian Eno, in the way O’Hearn places the instruments in different ambient fields and the way the tunes unfold so naturally and majestically. But far from being just a keyboard/synth workout, this features many other textures, from pulsing basses to electric Hawaiian guitar (recalling Eno’s gorgeous Apollo) ...

World Of Guitars
$9.69 Unlike the other three entries in Universal's 2004 discount-priced series of albums titled The Gospel Spirit, those by Loretta Lynn, Bill Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys, and the Statler Brothers, this one is not a specially assembled collection of tracks from separate LPs and singles. Rather, it is a straight reissue -- the first CD version -- of Conway Twitty's 1973 album Clinging to a Saving Hand. The ten-song set consists largely of newly written Nashville originals, and reached the Top 20 of the country charts on Twitty's career momentum. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Ocean Here Where Nothing Grows CD (2005)
World Of Guitars
$13.25 On their full-length debut, Portland, ME's Ocean stand between doom metal's insular, shadowy underworld and the relatively more expressive sounds of post-rock. In the three extended pieces on Here Where Nothing Grows -- 20 minutes is the median length -- Ocean eke out every last resonating echo in the guitars, and roar with a wordless rage that's as bleak as anything by Leviathan. There's a cold wind blowing in from the sea on this album, and it's never even heard of good news. But there's also a deadly, dreary accuracy to Ocean's sound that offers more than doom metal's simple, powerful grasp. The snare drum is placed with deadly, dreary accuracy throughout ...
