| | Stephanie Davis I'm Pullin' Through CD Stephanie Davis Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Stephanie Davis finds a middle ground between Western-inspired swing and classic ballad styles on I'm Pullin' Through, which offers four retro-styled originals alongside seven classic standards. Davis manages to display a pleasingly jazzy style without subsuming the natural Montana twang of her voice (and if the Billie Holiday influence in her phrasing isn't hard to spot, she also manages to bring it off with an easy grace). She's also chosen a fine set of material, and it speaks well of her songwriting that "Yellow Moon" and "There's a Springtime Feelin' in My Heart" sound right at home alongside tunes like "Taking a Chance on Love" and "He's Funny That Way." The band swings with grace and assurance, and the soloists (especially Jim Hoke on sax and clarinet and Rich O'Brien on guitar) reveal solid chops without making a nuisance of themselves. And the closer, "Big Sky Bounce," adds a welcome Western accent that also found a home on Davis' 1998 album River of No Return. I'm Pullin' Through feels as comfortable as a pair of well-worn jeans, but it sounds a good bit more stylish, and Davis would do well to revisit her jazzy side in between her more country-oriented projects. ~ Mark Deming
Personnel: Stephanie Davis (vocals, fiddle); Rich O'Brien, Rick Gordon (guitar); Jim Hoke (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Neil Rosengarden (trumpet); Tom McBryde (piano); John Vogt, Roy Huskey (bass); Walter Hartman (drums).
I'm Pullin' Through Music Stephanie Davis I'm Pullin' Through Songs I'm Pullin' Through Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Big Sky Swing In 1995 Stephanie Davis packed up a reputation as one of Nashville's best young singer/songwriters, and returned to the Big Sky country of Montana - the only area on earth larger than her desire to compose and perform music on her own terms. "I'm Pullin' Through", the second release from Davis' independent Recluse Records label, is her paean to the music of the swing era and like its predecessor, the western themed "River Of No Return", is an example of her refusal to be pigeon-holed into a specific musical genre. Backed by a jazz/swing combo of piano, string, woodwind, brass and rhythm players that share her infectious enthusiasm for the material, Davis serves up four original songs and eight standards in this recording. Her clear, sweet, seductive voice effortlessly travels a range of emotion from soulful ballad [I'm Pullin' Through] and sizzling torch song [You've Changed] to exuberant up-tempo numbers [Hallelujah, What A Little Moonlight Can Do]. Some listeners might be inclined to compare her vocalizations on these classics with those of Billie Holiday, but Davis resists the temptation to imitate her heroine, and instead draws only inspiration from the great Lady Day. Released in 1996, "I'm Pullin' Through" is another in a series of recordings by Stephanie Davis, an artist that never fails to provide you with your money's worth of entertainment. $5.25 Christmas music releases have become a country music tradition, but the result is often generic mushy background instrumentation on the same moldy standards. Guilty of this is Vince Gill, whose Let There Be Peace on Earth is as cliche-ridden as they come. ~ Roch Parisien

| | Burl Ives Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer CD (1995)
I'm Pullin' Through songs
$4.99 The Rankin/Bass animagic film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared on December 6, 1964. Since then, it has become the longest-running of all holiday TV specials (with, we hope, no end in sight). It's fitting that the grandfather of all Christmas specials features Burl Ives, still remembered warmly by millions as the voice behind the film's narrator, Sam the Snowman. Although this soundtrack bears his name, Ives appears only on a handful of songs: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The remaining vocals are handled by various cast members: "Jingle Jingle Jingle" features Stan Francis as Santa, "We're a Couple of Misfits" is sung by Billie Mae Richards (the voice of Rudolph) and Paul Soles (the voice of Hermie), "There's Always Tomorrow" is immortalized by Janet Orenstein (as Clarice), and a chorus shares "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year." The real musical genius behind the movie is Johnny Marks, a songwriter who had earlier written the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed ...
| | Hank Williams Revealed: The Unreleased Recordings CDs (2009) DGBK
I'm Pullin' Through album
$30.79 1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and pre-record shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life's CD preservation of this amazing treasure trove. The performances are intimate and relaxed, and Williams tackles an amazingly varied set list, singing old mountain ballads, hymns, cowboy tunes, and delivering recitations ...
