| | Stephanie Davis River Of No Return CD Stephanie Davis Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
As befits a woman who was born a fourth-generation Montana resident, Stephanie Davis' album River of No Return is country & western that favors the "western," both in terms of its musical approach and lyrical outlook. Backed by a small but empathetic acoustic combo who know how to put some swing in their step (anchored by Rich O'Brien on guitar and mandolin and Tom Morrell on steel guitar), Davis moves back and forth between songs of the western life, such as "Salt River Valley" and "Prairie Lullaby," and moral fables (such as "Give a Little Back" and "The Gift") that manage to sound heartfelt without becoming preachy in the process. While the album's production is a bit on the lean side, the performances sound fine, and Davis' voice, like her songs, manages to be both subtle and expressive, and her c&w material is convincing without losing touch with the easygoing swing of her earlier set of jazz and pop standards, I'm Pullin' Through (she's not a bad fiddler, either). Riders in the Sky contribute their typically superb harmonies on two cuts. A modest but enjoyable effort that suggests Davis is a talent worth watching. ~ Mark Deming

| River Of No Return Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) The Jewel of the Treasure State If the words "western music" conjure up images of Gene, Rex, Roy and The Sons Of The Pioneers singing heartbreaking ballads to herds of disinterested cattle, then you'll be pleasantly surprised by Montana native Stephanie Davis' "River Of No Return", the premiere release on her independent Recluse Records label. Davis, who endured a self-imposed exile to Nashville in order to hone her composing and performing skills (and was rewarded by having her songs recorded by Garth Brooks, who requested that she be his opening act while touring), wrote eight of the ten songs on this album. She explores the subject of the Modern West as both a concept of reality ["Wolves", where ranchers face the threats of both four and two-legged predators, and "Give A Little Bit Back", advocating extending a helping hand to the less fortunate], and as a state of mind [the idyllic "Prairie Lullabye", and the cowboy and cowgirl anthem "The Diamond-O"]. Other selections include the holiday-themed "The Gift", western standards "Salt River Valley", "River Of No Return", and instrumentals "Saturday Night At The White Bird School", a swinging "Big Sky Bounce", and a bouncing "Lone Star Swing". Released in 1996 to celebrate her return to the Big Sky country, "River Of No Return" showcases Stephanie Davis' considerable talent as both composer and performer. | | Brooks & Dunn #1's... And Then Some CDs (2009)
River Of No Return
$12.39 Three weeks before the release of this double-disc best-of-and-then-some collection, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, who as Brooks & Dunn were one of the most successful duos in country music history, decided to call it a day after 19 years, 40 singles (half of which topped the country charts), ten studio albums, and a slew of awards. As far as the industry was concerned, they went out on top. ...

River Of No Return
$12.55 Although for the rest of his life, underinformed fans of 1990s pop will forever be calling Darius Rucker "Hootie," the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer-songwriter makes his solo debut with a perfectly credible take on mainstream contemporary Nashville country. The laid-back, largely acoustic folk-pop of Hootie & the Blowfish was never that far removed from contemporary country in the first place, so only the fact that Rucker is the first major African-American country star since the heyday of Charley Pride makes the stylistic crossover out of the ordinary. First single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," a Top 5 hit on the Billboard country charts even prior to the album's release, makes clear how comfortable Rucker is with the blend of the Eagles and the Dixie Chicks that is contemporary country radio, and tracks like "History in the Making" and "Forever ...
| | Jesse Winchester Live From Mountain Stage CD (2001)
River Of No Return
$29.09 Jesse Winchester started his career as a singer/songwriter with his self-titled debut way back in 1970, and many will at least be familiar with his work through other singers. Jimmy Buffett sang the lovely "Biloxi," Jimmie Dale Gilmore the dreamy "Defying Gravity," and Emmylou Harris the pensive "Songbird." All of these songs show a careful attention to capturing and holding fragile moments, pregnant with emotion. Winchester's Live From Mountain Stage performance is barebones: just a guy, his guitar, and a fistful of gems. While this setup may lack ...
| | Cubalive! Recorded Live In Cuba CD (2003)
River Of No Return
$14.79 Whether it bursts onto the sidewalk from a bustling café or wafts over high-stone walls from a carnival parade blocks away, music in Cuba is omnipresent and multi-faceted. Cubalive!: Recorded Live in Cuba culls its 13 tracks from the three previously released volumes of Rounder's Routes of Rhythm series. So, while it's technically volume four, it's actually a comprehensive introduction to the series as it stands. Developed in conjunction with the PBS production Routes of Rhythm With Harry Belafonte, the series presents live recordings of Cuban music as it happens. The set includes gentle acoustic ballads, street jams, religious celebrations, and the sultry sounds of carnival. Guitar virtuoso Isaac Oveido's "Mi Botijia and "El Buen Camino" capture the intimate quality of watching a master perform up close, while insistent congas and flawless harmonies drive los Munequitos de Matanzas' "El Tocoloro." There is an unwritten law that all Cuban music collections must include at least one version of "Guantanemera"; fortunately, Duo del Bodeguita del Medio's take on the signature tune captures the lively spirit of the Bodeguita del Medio, where it was recorded. Linking the collection's disparate sounds are three versions of the Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Pinero's distinctive son, the traditional Cuban song form incorporating the country's entire musical history. But what truly make this collection entertaining are the incidental moments of these live recordings -- clapping, yelling, people having a good time. And that sounds good in any language. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Johnny Cash Complete Live At San Quentin CD (1969) (Import) Limited Edition; Special Edition; Netherlands
River Of No Return
$14.45 While the 2000 edition of this classic Johnny Cash performance, AT SAN QUENTIN (THE COMPLETE 1969 CONCERT), led listeners to believe that it presented the show in its entirety, this comprehensive two-CD/one-DVD reissue set proves that notion to be not quite true. Boasting a total of 31 tracks, the audio discs feature all of the songs from SAN QUENTIN's previous incarnations, most notably the country icon's definitive reading of the witty Shel Silverstein tune "A Boy Named Sue," but it also makes room for additional Cash numbers, including the fierce "Blistered," and tunes by other members of Cash's traveling show, such as Carl Perkins (a rollicking version of his own "Blue Suede Shoes") and the Statler Brothers (the upbeat "Flowers on the Wall"). The DVD documentary focuses on both Cash and his venue of choice, making this version of SAN QUENTIN ideal for aficionados of the Man in Black.
One of country music's unequivocal stars, Johnny Cash retained respect for the travails of the audience elevating him to that position. Recorded live at one of America's most notorious prisons, this album displays an empathy bereft of condescension and captures ...
