Helen Merrill Lilac Wine CD (2004)
Bands of Vic Meyers 1923-1929 & Vick Myers 1925 1926 album for sale Arrangements and piano by Torrie Zito (he's also worked with Tony Bennett and Sinead O'Connor) underscore the reflective temperament of the songs and Merrill's gentle, worldly wise vocals perfectly. Not for Merrill are showy displays of "technique"--her sublime singing draws attention to the song rather than the singer. If you savor the classic ballad style of Chris Connor, Nat "King" Cole, and Peggy Lee, you'll find LILAC WINE intoxicating.
On LILAC WINE, the eminent jazz singer Helen Merrill (whose fans have included everyone from great jazz arranger Gil Evans to Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood) applies her magnificent voice to an inspired selection of standards, forgoing any hackneyed old warhorses. Merrill's mellow tones weave their way through a moody setting reminiscent of Frank Sinatra albums like IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS OF THE MORNING. Swelling strings, muted trumpet, and exquisitely spare arrangements frame pensive lyrics embraced by a masterful singer with a gentle, seen-it-all tone.
Personnel: Helen Merrill (vocals); Alan Merrill (vocals, guitar, double bass); Lew Soloff (trumpet); Torrie Zito (piano, electric piano, keyboards); ...

Ahmed Abdul-Malik Jazz Sounds of Africa CD (2003)
Bands of Vic Meyers 1923-1929 & Vick Myers 1925 1926 songs Jazz Sounds of Africa compiles the complete contents of two early New Jazz LPs by Ahmed Abdul-Malik, which were originally issued as The Music of Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Sounds of Africa. The music on this reissue is simply captivating, as the brilliant bassist and oud player of Sudanese descent blends elements of jazz with that of Middle Eastern and African music. While the names of several of the contributing musicians are likely to be unfamiliar to many jazz fans, except for Andrew Cyrille and Tommy Turrentine, the music proves to be fascinating throughout both sessions. Any fan of John Coltrane's composition "India," which was written and performed around the same time frame, will delight in the hypnotic opener, "Nights on Saturn," with an eerie solo by an unidentified Korean reed instrument played by Bilal Abdurrahman. The leader overdubs on oud (the Middle Eastern ancestor of the mandolin) on several tracks, as well as demonstrates his fine arco bass on the old standard "Don't Blame Me." Tommy Turrentine, whose career was unjustly overlooked because he retired from music prematurely, is a compelling soloist on the 1961 session. The latter session is far more percussive, with Abdul-Malik utilizing a larger ensemble. The highlight of this date is the lengthy exploration of the infectious original "Communication," which almost conjures up an African tribal chant with Richard Williams' trumpet as the lead voice, with the percussionists eventually taking over as they play off one another with vocal encouragement from one of the players. The songs on this CD compilation of the two-decades-old albums have stood the test of time very well. ~ Ken Dryden

Sweethearts Of The Rodeo Beautiful Lies CD (1996) Top Seller
Bands of Vic Meyers 1923-1929 & Vick Myers 1925 1926 CD music Sneaking through the herd of slick, contemporary country artists who are basically singing pop (if not for the occasional fiddle or pedal steel) must not be an easy task. But every now and then comes the rare traditionalist with a twang and a swagger and a bucket full of heartache to sing about. Enter Sweethearts of the Rodeo. They are country even when (or if) country isn't cool. And thank goodness. Because even legendary stalwart Dolly Parton tiptoes over to the bluegrass side of the pasture half the time. Not these gals. With harmonies galore, they sing and sing. And they aren't separatists either, tossing in covers of Donovan's "Catch the Wind" and Bob Dylan's "One More Night." They work because those tunes hold that simple, heartfelt beauty -- missing in so many of Nashville's hitmakers -- that is the essence of good country music. Beautiful Lies is a decent little record. Nothing terribly earth-shattering, but that's just fine. ~ Kelly McCartney
Recording information: Garage.
Sweethearts Of The Rodeo: Janis Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar); Kristine Arnold (vocals).

Midwest Product World Series of Love CD (2003)
Bands of Vic Meyers 1923-1929 & Vick Myers 1925 1926 buy CD music The crisp efficiency Midwest Product previously dabbled in takes center stage on the seven-track World Series of Love, released just over a year after their full-length debut. For better or worse, it displays more of the trio's dry sense of humor. This isn't just indicated in the title; the playful "Bank" plays out like a cover of a lost Silicon Teens song, with a detached but content drone (the younger brother of Adult.'s Nicola Kuperus?) intoning about the love he has for his job. "Dead Cat," the closest rival to Specifics' "Still Love in the Midwest" in terms of energy, includes strained vocals that might or might not be taking a swipe at early Ministry. The best moments are the less playful ones, where they also happen to maximize the value of their restraint and attention to detail. The brightest single moment is far and away "Duckpond," in which the trio takes on the kind of alternately introspective and blissful guitar-and-electronics wizardry -- combining pop with experimentalism in a natural fashion -- that Denmark's Manual has made his stock-in-trade. The song shows once again that, when at their most powerful, Midwest Product have the ability to make their electronics sound entirely human -- as if they are breathing. ~ Andy Kellman

Backwood Creatures Living Legends CD (2003)
Bands of Vic Meyers 1923-1929 & Vick Myers 1925 1926 CD music When a band names their first album Living Legends and poses for the front cover in the midst of a '60s-vintage gold record presentation ceremony, it's safe to assume a high irony factor. Germany's Backwood Creatures heightens the humor by including songs like "You Definitely Suck" (a Queers-like highlight, with the catchiest chorus on the whole album) and "Rock 'n' Roll Is Lame" (which unfortunately is a lot weaker than such a combative title can withstand), but unlike a lot of similar bands -- the Queers, the Riverdales, the Mr. T Experience, Screeching Weasel, the Methadones, and most of the rest of the mid-'90s pop-punk bands come immediately to mind -- the jokes are never the main point. This five-piece prefers to focus on playing stripped-down, garage-inspired pop-punk tunes (11 solid originals by guitarist Nilz Nonchalant and a ramalama singalong cover of the Misfits' gorefest "Skulls") with no pretension and a surfeit of rough-edged hooks. Those not already attuned to this kind of music won't have their minds changed, but anyone with more than one record on the Lookout! label needs this. ~ Stewart Mason
