Once Through is a quartet led by saxophonist/flutist Dan Moretti; it also includes guitarist Bruce Bartlett, bassist Marty Ballou, and drummer Marty Richards. Once Through is also the name of the album, and it's an apt title: the nine tracks included here were all recorded live in the studio, and most of them are first takes. At first glance, the program looks like the usual program of standards performed by a more or less predictable combo of sax, guitar, bass, and drums. Look closer, though, and you'll notice that the first track is a smoldering arrangement of the Bill Withers soul classic "Ain't No Sunshine," which is then closely followed by a version of "Tenderly" on which Moretti plays incredibly sweet-toned flute and leads the band from a well-organized head into a free jazz jungle before bringing them out the other side again for the out chorus. "Bag's Groove" is unrecognizable at first, but soon emerges in a dark, downtempo arrangement; the Thelonious Monk standard "Rhythm-A-Ning," on the other hand, is a headlong romp on which the guitar lays out completely, leaving an Ornette Coleman-ish feel to the proceedings. The variety of textures in evidence and the intelligence behind these arrangements, in addition to the virtuosity of the playing, make this a very special record. ~ Rick Anderson

Once Through album
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable ...

Once Through album
$9.89 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative ...

| | Pharoah Sanders Pharoah's First CD (1965)
Once Through album
$13.79 Pharoah Sanders' first release on the ESP label is relatively tame compared to what was to come. Trumpeter Stan Foster and pianist Jane Getz are allowed as much solo space as the leader. The problem with that is they play bebop, Sanders doesn't. You can hear that Sanders is ready to go out, but restrains himself due to this mismatching of musicians. Sanders does retain the Coltrane influence on this date and, especially on the initial portion of "Seven By Seven," you can hear the beginnings of Sanders' trademark tenor screech. However, it becomes obvious by the conclusion of the track that the musical sparing between Sanders and Foster never jells. While Sanders wants to fly, Foster is content to walk. "Bethera" finds Foster and Getz taking extended solos, playing as though Sanders isn't there! It sounds as if this date was set up for someone like Dexter Gordon, who didn't show up, so they got Sanders at the last minute. Sanders really has no purpose on this conventional date besides initial name exposure as a leader. What a shame. ~ Al Campbell
Pharoah Sanders's debut as a leader has been reissued on this ESP CD. Sanders, who is joined by trumpeter Stan Foster, pianist Jane Getz, bassist William Bennett and drummer Marvin Pattillo, sounds remarkably like John Coltrane on "Seven by Seven"; he had not found his own musical personality yet. "Bethera" is a bit more distinctive and overall this historic set should greatly interest fans of both Coltrane and Sanders. ~ Scott Yanow
