The second Gearhead full-length from California's Red Planet finds the boys adorning the cover in coordinated black and red outfits that immediately conjure up preconceptions that the music inside will sound like those other fashion plates the Hives and the White Stripes (which wouldn't seem like too much of a stretch, since Gearhead also served as home to the Hives). Thankfully, looks can be deceiving. Red Planet's crunchy guitar attack and big choruses owe far more to power pop than garage rock, and, odds are, the band's members own more Cheap Trick live albums than Velvet Underground bootlegs. The vocals show traces of the playful snottiness of Robin Zander, but this record has the fingerprints of outfits like the Knack, the Nerves, the Flamin' Groovies, the Raspberries, and the Cars all over it. Although the album hardly changes the group's formula, it's a suitable follow-up to 2000s Revolution 33 and is sure to go over well with fans and select newcomers. This is a fun slab of straight-up, guitar-driven power pop with big vocals for those who find the Loch Ness Mouse too syrupy, Supergrass too British, and Superdrag too indie. It's also a surprising foray into power pop for Gearhead, a label normally associated with punks and garage throwbacks. ~ Karen E. Graves

$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain."

$10.65 For a band working within the flawed emo/post-hardcore construct that actually has something to offer -- namely Jeremy Griffith, their talented singer and principal songwriter -- Moments in Grace seem eager to wrap themselves in cliché. Rites of Spring reference or not, "Moments in Grace" is an interchangeable emo Mad Lib. It's a moniker in threes, preferably combining units of time or distance with pain, romance, or divinity themes. Moonlight Survived is utterly meaningless, yet immediately weighty; its cover art is appropriately murky. Then there are Griffith's lyrics, which stagnate into a blah mess of romantic fallout, soul-baring confession, and vaguely spiritual deep thoughts. "And I cry for the death of our dove"; "I gave you my last breath and you left me"; "I walked blindly toward the lifeless hell" -- is this rock music or a Deepak Chopra seminar? Griffith is tremendously expressive vocally, with a melancholy in his voice suggestive of British singers like Starsailor's James Walsh. But he's hindered by those clunky placeholder lyrics, and muddy Brian McTernan production. The veteran helmer (Thrice, Hot Water Music) has a vested interest in Moments in Grace, tapping them as the first signee to his Salad Days imprint (via Atlantic). But Moonlight Survived is mired in a foggy production lowland that either skews Grace toward their peers or broadcasts them through a reverb foghorn ("Broken Promises"). Except for the lyrics, the album is never really bad, particularly if you're a die-hard fan of the emo-influenced sound. But it suffers from overambition. While "Stratus"' shifts between urgent electric guitars and synth/strings atmospherics would work wonders for Styx, the song seems hopelessly melodramatic here.
