A new Yes box is like a new Star Trek film. The same core group will buy it/see it whether it's crap or not, resulting in an endless cycle of repackaging that exploits the fans who made the franchises so popular in the first place. Yes have always seemed more of an industry than a band, so it comes as no surprise that their deeply rooted PR machine has dug up another collection of "previously unreleased gems," wrapped it in one of Roger Dean's hippie/sci-fi landscapes, and slapped on an exhaustive booklet of play-by-play anecdotes from fans and fellow musicians. Anyone who has followed the group's prolific history knows that its members have splintered and regrouped so many times that their side projects alone demand the box treatment. The Word Is Live collects performances caught between 1970-1988 -- the years 1972-1975, despite boasting the group's most lauded roster, seem to have never existed here. The band's 2003 reunion tour is also skipped over, focusing instead on the fragmented Big Generator lineup of the late '80s. Rabid fans will no doubt empty their wallets for this admittedly attractive box, but the jury's out on whether or not they'll play it more than once. ~ James Christopher Monger A three-disc collection of Yes concert performances dating from the early 1970s to the late '80s, THE WORD IS LIVE presents the pioneering British prog-rock group in its various incarnations. The first disc features live tracks from '70 and '71, when organist Tony Kaye's distinctive Hammond lines figured strongly into the band's performances, which here include a jam-heavy take on "America" that precedes its studio version. The second and third discs are filled with concert appearances that have Kaye's replacements, either keyboardist Rick Wakeman or Patrick Moraz, surging through classics such as "Sweet Dreams" and "Roundabout." The set goes on to include Kaye's return to the fold, most notably on the high-energy medley of "Make It Easy" and "Owner of a Lonely Heart." While hardcore, bootleg-seeking Yes fans have undoubtedly heard some of these recordings before, THE WORD IS LIVE performs a great service by compiling these era-spanning tracks, making the set essential for any enthusiast.Mojo (Publisher) (p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] record of a trend-defying band's progress from prog-rock pioneers to US arena rockers..." Word Is Live Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great selections Just about all of the band's line-ups are represented here. A great historical document of Yes. Submitted by dsmccann (Massachusetts) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
3 DISC TIME CAPSULE Hearing how Yes evolved is an experience. From the early years to the late 80's you can feel the magic build. The first disc may sound a bit tinny but you'll appreciate their music. My favorite disc is #3 but #2 comes a close second. If you ever saw Yes live this should bring back those memories. Not much over production here, raw footage as it was played. You can't go back in reality but your memories can never be taken away. Enjoy! Submitted by carey c (KC MO) Was This Review Helpful? Essential...Kinda At last we get almost a full disc of Yes live with the "Yes Album" line-up. This disc alone well worth the admission price. The second disc features a brilliant "Sound Chaser", not previously released in a live version. Then there's the "Big Medley" from the 1978 tour which has the band tearing gracefully through "Time And A Word", "Long Distance Runaround", "The Fish", "Perpetual Change" and "Soon".
My only real complaint here is the inclusion of less than high fidelity tracks (Then, For Everyone, Go Through This & We Can Fly From Here). The first two are from BBC broadcasts, previously released, and the other two from the "Drama" tour, unfortunately marred by distortion, crackles and pops. I think this would have been a better 2 disc set with the low quality stuff chopped out. Submitted by Occam Razor (Holyoke, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
How about another shot of this! Everything is here? No! BUT .. what is here is outstanding. Worth every dime if you have seen a few Yes Tours it will bring back memories, if you missed some, it will impress. Steve Howe playing Peter Banks is very interesting because Banks was great too. Rabin playing Rabin. Moraz playing as only he can.
The Big Medley is worth the price, along with the Drama Tour tracks. Great job.
Missing? (Rhino Listen)... Talk Tour, Union Tour, Tales Tour, and then throw in some post Keys but pre-Monterey stuff -OBTW- the Drama stuff was so good, you should find a copy of Machine Messiah and Does it Really Happen live, and throw them in for completeness. No one may want to hear Trevor singing Jon, but Trevor/Chris singing Trevor/Chris parts was very, very well done.
There you go Rhino 'The Word is Live Part 2'. Submitted by Mike (Toby Farms, Pa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good stuff! Rhino-Elektra-Atlantic keeps spewing out box sets which is why any music past Big Generator does not appear. I think? The Buggles-Yes songs really stand out. We Can Fly From Here is excellent as well as Go Through This. Circus of Heaven is a great track as well from CD2 and seems to be a difficult song to play. The rarities stand out and make this worth buying. Also, one must appreciate the quality keyboard work of the young Tony Kaye pre-synth era Yes. Steve Howe did some of the mixing on this and his parts stand out a bit but that is OK by me. The Rabin-Yes music seems to stem from a Westwood One radio broadcast and it sounds very good. Rabin shines on the guitar solo on Hold On. The book is great and features Geddy Lee's take on Chris Squire...ah a Ruch/Yes tour now that would be something to record...eh?
