The chaotic orchestral-noise sounds of Greg Gillis' Girl Talk is loud and abrasive on Secret Diary. The frenetic pace of some of the songs is downright confusing at times, with the listener mentally rushing to figure out the method to the madness. Gillis is somehow able to piece together some timeless pieces of music into a dizzying, yet listenable, collection of collage songs. The disc starts, appropriately, with "Let's Start This Party Right," which is chock-full of computer samples and a wealth of infectious beats. What follows is a lively and irreverent cover of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." Cyndi Lauper, Jay-Z, Destiny's Child, and C&C Music Factory are also borrowed from to create an album that is refreshingly new, despite its use of very familiar songs. "What if..." is a noisy and eclectic take on Sheryl Crow's cover of Joan Osborne's "What if God was One of Us." He mixes rap and abrasive electronic beats on top to create a truly original sample. The use of the Price is Right theme song on "Unicorn Vs. Gravity" is pure genius. On "Fun in the Sun," he blends a deafening series of beats over the Fresh Prince's "Summertime." Matt Wellins collaborates with Gillis on the disc's final track, the disorienting and ambitious "Friends 4-Ever." With Secret Diary, Girl Talk impressed many in the electronic noise community. Illegal Art released the disc in 2002. ~ Stephen Cramer

| | New Radicals Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too CD (1998)
Secret Diary music CDs
$12.09 On their debut MAYBE YOU'VE BEEN BRAINWASHED TOO, New Radicals meld sweeping hooks with aggressive harmonies and large dollops of stream-of-consciousness soul. Wunderkid Gregg Alexander is essentially New Radicals, with a voice that bounces between Karl Wallinger's husky rasp and Billy Corgan's nasal whine. His songs go by such odd monikers as "Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You" and "Crying Like a Church On Monday." Having grown up with parents who switched religions like most people changed channels, it's no accident that Alexander avoids using heavy-handed didactic aphorisms to get his point across. Instead, his songwriting ranges ...

Rave and roll? Rave rock? For MR. HAPPY GO LUCKY, this stalwart songwriting talent has come up with another batch of soulful, bucolic rock songs. But this time--surprise--he has added some cutting-edge trip-hop drum loops and samples to his signature heartland rock.
The urban rhythms somehow sound natural in the context of Mellencamp's seasoned roots rock. He could have easily left his songs in the electric folk-rock format on which he made his name, but the experimentation here proves he's not ready to sit back on his laurels. He really seems interested in exploring new musical territory. And it's only right that the man who could be the godfather of today's alternative roots rock (i.e. without whom there could be no Hootie) is the one hammering the genre into exciting new shapes.
John Mellencamp responded to his massive heart attack and close call with death with Mr. Happy Go Lucky, the most overtly ambitious album in his career. Mellencamp has always been a bit of a fatalist, so it isn't any great surprise that there is an undercurrent of dark mortality running through most of his songs. What is a surprise is his musical approach. Although he hasn't abandoned the essential elements of his music -- the rootsy instrumentation, the violins, the simple song structures, the gritty folk-rock -- he has augmented them with the help of Junior Vasquez, a noted dance producer. Vasquez doesn't push Mellencamp into dance, but he adds certain dynamics and techniques from club music to Mr. Happy Go Lucky, which occasionally gives the album a greater depth. It's a gentle change, not a forceful one -- nothing sounds like dance music, but there are deeper rhythms and bass throughout the album, which breathes life into well-crafted songs like "Key West Int

Peter Gabriel was such a charismatic frontman and unique singer/lyricist that many assumed Genesis would fold after his departure. WIND & WUTHERING proved that there was much to the group than just Gabriel's talents. Drummer Phil Collins, who'd sung a couple of songs on previous albums, had taken over lead vocal ...
