This duo meeting of guitarists Gene Bertoncini and Frank Vignola pairs musicians separated by a generation in age, but that's all. Both men have proven themselves as strong soloists in group settings and each of them has made rewarding solo CDs, but they are also very much up to the task of the necessary give and take of guitar duets. They make the most of timeless melodies from the Great American Songbook, including "If I Had You," "Moonlight in Vermont," and "Out of Nowhere." Their vigorous workout of Fats Waller's "The Jitterbug Waltz" and an enticing medley of bossa nova favorites by Antonio Carlos Jobim also prove to be stimulating. It's a shame there isn't also a video of this studio session, which would be of considerable interest to jazz guitarists and fans. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, ...

Meeting Of The Grooves album
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation ...
| | Malo CD (1972)
Meeting Of The Grooves CD music
$8.05 Malo's debut album remains their best and best-known work, primarily for the inclusion of the hit single "Suavecito." That track managed to make a Chicago-like pop-soul song sound hip with its smooth integration of Latin rhythms and irresistible "la la la" chorus. However, it represented just one facet of a band who, despite some expected similarities to Santana, played some of the most exciting and exuberant fusions of rock, soul, and Latin music. The six extended tracks (all clocking in at over six minutes apiece) leaned more heavily on hot Latin jazz brass than Santana did, though Jorge Santana himself generated plenty of friction with his burning electric guitar. It's not an exaggeration to state that by the time this came out in 1972, ...
