This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series.
Dinah Washington's installment of the ongoing 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection concentrates on her pop-oriented recordings for Mercury Records. Although this doesn't make for the most comprehensive overview of her career, it works well at shining a spotlight on a particular portion of her career, and the end result is quite enjoyable on those terms. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Dinah Washington music CDs
$12.59 When Brian De Palma's ultra-violent gangster film, SCARFACE, came out in 1983, it would be impossible to predict the imprint the movie would leave on the then-nascent world of hip-hop. At the time, the rap landscape was much more lighthearted, focusing on battling with rhymes instead of guns; it was before BDP's 9mm went bang, N.W.A. came STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, and the Geto Boys related their grotesque stories from the street. Al Pacino's darkly potent performance as uncompromisingly ruthless drug-boss Tony Montana resonated in the world of gangsta rap--lines from SCARFACE were sampled in dozens of songs, the lifestyle was emulated, and Akshen of the Geto Boys even rechristened himself Scarface.
To celebrate the movie's 20th Anniversary, Def Jam has released MUSIC INSPIRED BY SCARFACE, a killer compilation collecting tracks that feature some connection to the seminal picture, from 1983's classic anti-drug anthem "White ...

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Dinah Washington songs
$36.99 This edition of GOLDEN YEARS OF THE SOVIET NEW JAZZ VOL. 4 is limited to 750 copies.
The final installment in Leo Feigin's four-part, 16-CD series Golden Years of the Soviet New Jazz presents two main differences with previous volumes. First, it is devoted to a single group, the Ganelin Trio and its members Vyacheslav Ganelin, Vladimir Chekasin, and Vladimir Tarasov. Second, of the near five hours of music, only 40 minutes were previously unreleased. That said, does the Ganelin Trio deserve a four-CD set? Yes. Do their out of print LPs from the '80s deserve to be reissued? Yes. So does this fourth volume ...

Freddie Redd composed the music for Jack Gelber's The Connection, a gritty play about musician junkies. Gelber had originally thought that the play would feature real musicians -- who would also double as actors in minor roles -- improvising on blues and jazz standards in the tradition of Charlie Parker, but Redd convinced him to use an original score. The two weaved Redd's original compositions into the score, making it an integral part of the play, but the music holds up superbly ...
