One thing you need to know as you approach Spiritu's eponymous debut: expect the unexpected. On the surface, the New Mexico foursome appear to be just another stoner rock band, and yet their music boldly faces the risk of generic pigeonholing, and counters it with the most obvious and, at the same time, most elusive antidote of all: great songs. Sure, nine-minute opener "Z" may evoke shades of Australian space rock/prog rock weirdos Alchemist; their cover of the old Sir Lord Baltimore nugget "Woman Tamer" may smack of stoner rock supremos Monster Magnet (not least because Monster Magnet recycled the song's distinctive ascending riff elsewhere); "Glorywhore" may stretch its melancholy tendrils into Alice in Chains territory; and the whole thing is, of course, blessed by the spirit of Black Sabbath. But the members of Spiritu manage to integrate these touchstones in such convincing fashion that the resulting, peculiar blend easily stands up on its own terms. They also have an ace in the hole in expressive vocalist Jadd, whose surprising power and range exceed all the usual stoner rock limitations to resemble a less operatic version of Iron Maiden legend Bruce Dickinson -- no kidding! Even more surprising, there are moments on Spiritu where commercial accessibility seems like a perfectly rational proposition, and the deft touch of producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney) can also be clearly heard on standout cuts "Fat Man in Thailand," and the comparatively concise "Clean Livin'." As yet another long but satisfying track, "Slump" brings the album coasting to the finish line; there's much here that suggests a bright future for Spiritu. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess CD (2000)
Spiritu CD music
$10.59 Evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess is an unheralded recording by Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment alumnus John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess is a unique entry in the Dream Theater family discography. Recorded live in Nyack, New York, the duo performed a mixed set of acoustic and electric (guitar only) compositions. Both players are world-class musicians, but Rudess in particular demonstrates his well-rounded skills, proving why he is an in-demand session player for the likes of David Bowie and Paul Winter. Petrucci too is a fine musician, but lacks the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication to serve as a strong accompanist. This limitation does not prevent the session from being enjoyable, in fact, it is Petrucci's energetic soloing that provides the most excitement. It was obvious that both players had several ideas and styles they wanted to explore, which are done so with restraint and sensitivity. The opening "Furia Taurina" finds Petrucci displaying his DiMeola-like chops on acoustic guitar ...
| | Cinderella - In Concert DVD (1991)
Spiritu music CDs
$12.35 When Cinderella was first formed in the mid-1980s, critics compared the band's light metal sound to that of Bon Jovi. Later releases saw the group incorporating more blues and rock elements into its music, with front-man Tom Keifer's Steven Tyler-esque ...
| | Rush Exit Stage Left CD (1981) Remastered
Spiritu songs
$12.05 Hot on the heels of their most successful album, Rush's 1981 tour was documented and released as EXIT, itself a Top 10 record. The package is an essential purchase for Rush diehards as well as hard rock fans. It makes a fine companion to ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, as there are no repeated tracks. The two live records combine to make a fine representation of Rush's prime era.
"YYZ" from MOVING PICTURES features Neil Peart's drum solo and shows why he is truly one of rock's premier skin bashers. Fan favorite "Closer to the Heart" gets the crowd participation going while the epic "Jacob's Ladder" is made to be played in an arena setting. "Xanadu" and album closer "La Villa Strangiato" are both mammoth tracks that exceed the studio versions due to the excellent interplay of the band and their growth as musicians. Recorded in the U.K. and Canada, EXIT is a phenomenal live recording that shows the band can interpret their studio material with both feeling and expertise.
Rush was planning on releasing a live album after the Permanent Waves tour, but manager Cliff Burnstein convinced the group that they were peaking musically and should go straight back into the recording studio -- resulting in their finest album, 1981's Moving Pictures. So after the tour wound down, their postponed live album was finally assembled, released as Exit...Stage Left the same year. The ...
| | Blind Guardian Night At The Opera CD (2002)
Spiritu album
$13.09 Contains an untitled hidden track following " And Then There Was Silence."
Probably the most adventurous disc of Blind Guardian's career (and that's saying something with this troupe), A Night at the Opera lives up to its name by channeling Queen's most symphonic arias through a dynamic prog metal background that makes Fate's Warning's most complex licks seem positively pedestrian in comparison with a glorious production that allows every nuance to literally explode from the loudspeakers. As ambitious as this disc is, however, it is similarly difficult to digest. Everything is over the top to the nth degree; every refrain is bolstered with a chorus lifted to the heavens; every song is an overwrought epic overture of garish calls to Valhalla; every moment is a grandiose concerto. By the time you hit the bonus track "Mies del Dolor," the only moment of the disc where Blind Guardian lightens up even a little, the band must be exhausted. No doubt, the listener will be too. ~ Brian O'Neill

| | Melissa Ferrick Massive Blur CD (1993)
Spiritu CD music
$5.95 Melissa Ferrick's recording career was off to a fairly impressive start with her debut album, Massive Blur, which showed her to be a convincing, expressive pop/rock vocalist as well as a thoughtful and probing lyricist. When this CD came out, the singer/songwriter wasn't well known, but she had a small East Coast following that swore by her. Ferrick did all of the writing on this album, and she packs quite an emotional punch on such introspective originals as "Honest Eyes," "What Have I Got to Lose" and "Blue Sky Night." Ferrick is especially compelling on "Breaking Vows" and the ...
| | Nightwish Angels Fall First CD (1997) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Spiritu music CDs
$35.99 ANGELS FALL FIRST is the first release for Finnish goth metal stalwarts Nightwish and features "Beauty and the Beast," and "Lappi."
When then tiny independent record label Spinefarm decided to take a chance on a brand new group called Nightwish by releasing a modest 500-unit pressing of their first album, Angels Fall First (originally recorded as a simple demo), little did they know this would quickly evolve into their biggest future cash cow, and one of Finland's most successful bands ever! Believe it: such were the humble origins and expectations for both band and album; despite the already quite advanced songwriting abilities of chief architect, keyboardist, and vocalist Tuomas Holopainen, which adorned melodic power metal with gothic, folk, and classical music elements, then topped them with the budding vocal power of a still baby-faced opera student named Tarja Turunen. Completed by guitarist/bassist Emppu Vuorinen and drummer Jukka Nevalainen, the nascent Nightwish were in fact merely scratching the surface of their commercial potential (and ensuing stardom), at this stage; yet they showed amazing courage and versatility on forceful tracks like "Elvenpath" and "Know Why the Nightingale Sings," the Finnish folk-steeped "The Carpenter," and an early glimpse of their latter-day fascination with musical theater in "Beauty and the Beast." So even though there were still several areas where the precocious bandmembers required additional seasoning (e.g. replacing Holopainen's unsatisfying vocal efforts, leaving ...
