You've got to love marketing, especially when it ends up serving a good purpose. Ghostland's 1998 debut was sadly neglected by listeners -- at least until the trance remix of "Guide Me God" hit the dancefloors. And now, what happens but that album appears under the title of...Guide Me God. But a rose is a rose, no matter the name, and the soulful, cinematic sound of Ghostland is wonderful. Sinéad O'Connor takes the vocals on the title cut (as she does on "Blue" and "Your Time Will Come"), with the sweep of an orchestra behind her on a song that truly does sound like a prayer (notably, the track stands alone here -- on the original release it faded into the next cut), but the vision throughout is by the main trio of Justin Adams, John Reynolds, and Caroline Dale, who bring together Celtic, Arabic, and modern classical influences in a wonderfully minimalist way. All too often, it's Dale who takes the high ground here, with some resonant cello lines that can recall Arvo Pärt, as on "Ghostland." Natacha Atlas contributes some exquisite singing, too (combining with O'Connor on the title cut, although she keeps more in the background). Throughout there's a delicate, ethereal beauty (and often majesty) that leaves the listener in no doubt that there's more than one song to Ghostland. ~ Chris Nickson

| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Guide Me God songs
$8.49 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector ...
| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Guide Me God album
$15.15 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained ...
