| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Crystal Vision
$10.39 Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major players in the pop-metal field; the New Yorkers did have a small following, although not a huge one. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable record. It doesn't contain any pop-metal masterpieces like Kiss' "Shout It out Loud" or Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," but tracks like "Cherry Baby" and "Rock Six Times" are certainly decent. Most of the time, Starz vocalist Michael Lee Smith sings about the same things that Kiss and Sweet were singing about in the '70s; namely, all-night parties and wild young women in tight dresses. Starz's lyrics, as a rule, were meant to be fun, ...
| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Crystal Vision
$13.79 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback ...
| | Coby Brown Group Homesick CD (2001)
Crystal Vision
$13.95 When singer Coby Brown and his Coby Brown Group started playing the New York club scene in the late '90s, they often found themselves being compared to the Dave Matthews Band. It's a valid comparison, to be sure -- like Matthews, Brown embraces pop/rock that has been heavily influenced by the soul and funk of the 1960s and 1970s. But Homesick, Brown's debut album, isn't as diverse or eclectic as Matthews' releases -- and Matthews isn't the only comparison that comes to mind when you're listening to this CD. At times, Brown reminds you of Lenny Kravitz -- specifically, Kravitz's more subtle and understated work. Brown doesn't get into the sort of Jimi Hendrix-minded hard rock that Kravitz has sometimes provided, but he does, at times, make you think of Kravitz's more restrained offerings. Homesick isn't an in-your-face sort of album; Brown doesn't try to win you over with aggression or attitude, but those who appreciate subtlety will hear his potential (as both a vocalist and a songwriter) on soul-minded pop/rock items like "I'm Not Leaving" and "Halloween." Unlike Matthews, Brown doesn't get into a lot of irony -- Matthews' take on 1970s funk/soul culture can be very ironic and humorous, but that isn't the sort of thing that Brown is going for. On Homesick, the Generation Xer comes across as someone ...
| | Barry Manilow Even Now - Expanded Edition CD (1978) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Crystal Vision
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Wally Traugott (Tower Mastering/Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California).
Though it's best known for the uptempo, discofied "Copacabana," EVEN NOW is actually one of Manilow's most introspective '70s recordings. It's full of songs about failed and failing romances, occasionally lightened by a sunny tune like "Can't Smile Without You." On the title cut, Manilow looks back on a lost love to find that he still bears emotional scars. "Starting Again" details the growth of infidelity and mistrust in a relationship, to an unnerving minor-key melody. The obscure gem on EVEN NOW is "I Was A Fool (To Let You Go)," a subtle, jazzy saloon song worthy of Sinatra himself, in which Manilow castigates himself for letting ...

$10.15 KUDISAN KAIBiography                                                   written by Sheila J. HardyKudisan Kai, the artist formerly known as Natalie Jackson, has made an incredible journey from opera to alternative metal. "For my parents, classical was the way to go. I became good at it." When she was 13 years old, Kudisan starred as Madame Butterfly. "When I went to Howard U., the presiding music was jazz or r&b/jazz and I wanted to excel in what was popular in my environment. So I set out to be the best I could in jazz." The best is exactly what she became. Kudisan graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and received additional training at the Tanglewood Summer Music Program and The Eastman School of Music in Rochester. She went on to pursue graduate studies in Voice and Arts Administration at New York University, New York.    This classically trained singer got her commercial music start in jazz on recordings with the Howard University Jazz Ensemble.  As a result of this exposure, she received Downbeat Magazines Best Jazz Vocalist Award.  She later toured with Anita Baker and Natalie Cole.  Then, she did an about face and toured for six years with Elton John. Kudisan also worked extensively with Chaka Khan.    "When I toured with Chaka I realized that what we have in common is the use of dynamics the use of loud and edgy tones, countered with soft, airy tones. We both use all areas of our voice, moving from one extreme to the next.  In R&B music, there is a formula, and if you don't do those kinds of runs or finesse your sound in that manner, people won't buy it. R&B did not give me the freedom I wanted.  Then, I found that experience in rock music. I found a freedom to sound whatever way I wanted to sound in this genre." Kudisan has appeared on Oprah, Rosie ODonnell, and The Today Show.  Her latest appearances were with Beck on tour; MTVs Total Request Live; and with Sting on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  The range of artists with whom Kudisan has recorded reflects the depth of her experience, and includes Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Joe Cocker, Saliva, Mary J. Blige, ...
