The ever-growing genre that finds classical Indian instrumentation and hymns being used by Western musicians can basically be traced back to the Beatles' 1968 trip to India. Fast-forward 30 years and you find that artists like Krishna Das broke further ground by making kirtan or chanting music popular amongst the minor masses of hatha yoga practitioners and spiritual seekers. Dave Stringer falls somewhere between those two signposts, leaning slightly more toward the Beatles' side of the fence, as he also draws on jazz and pop influences to round out his sound. The resulting Brink is an eclectic, though flowing, blend of thoughtful compositions and Indian traditionals. Stringer is by no means the greatest vocalist in the world, but he manages to pull it off with half-decent aplomb whether singing about math trouble or Lord Shiva. He's also joined by the really stunning multilingual vocalists Azam Ali, Mamak Khadem, and Donna Delory in Sanskrit, Farsi, and English, respectively. (Good taste in the supporting cast can help carry a fellow a long way.) Both "I and Me" and "Ganashyama" are sensually haunting in their expressions of spiritual longing and devotion. If you're in the mood for a mellow version of Jai Uttal, Brink is worth checking out. ~ Kelly McCartney

NAPRA Review (11-12/02, p.63) - "...These pop, jazz, and Eastern-influenced original compositions are thoroughly entertaining..." Yoga Journal (04/03, pp.171-2) - "...Stringer moves back and forth between original pop songs performed in English and traditional Sanskrit chants....A sequence of elegant aural rainbows, retaining an Eastern cultural resonance even when fleshing out unabashedly pop melodies..." Brink songs
$11.65 Stars on Guitars is a collection of the Ventures performing virtually every popular surf guitar instrumental that has ever been released, along with several other rock instrumentals. The group sounds quite good as they plow through these songs, saving the first disc for the covers while the second disc is made up of music from two of their previous live releases. They go all over the map here, covering everyone from the Rolling Stones to Dick Dale with their typical moody guitar and bizarre arrangements. The reliance on keyboards does hurt the record on the first disc, but they overcome that problem with their sheer weirdness. Their covers of '80s superhits "Axel F" and "St. Elmo's Fire" need to be heard to be believed. Although they may no longer be the surf rock giants they once were, the Ventures can still contribute very unique and unusual music that tends to float closer to the Residents than any other recognizable reference point. ~ Bradley ...
| | Nada Shakti Samadhi CD (1990)
Brink album
$13.25 Samadhi is a collaboration between Czechoslovakian vocalist Nada Shakti and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Bruce BecVar. But while Shakti's vocals are based on the ancient chants of India, BecVar's blend of Western synthesizer soundscapes with slight touches of Indian instrumentation suggest Samadhi is based more in the traditions of new age than anything else. "Gayatri Mantra-Illumination Mantra" is awash in reverb and accompanied by a forest of rattling percussion instruments; keyboards patter somewhere in its echoing depths as Shakti intones a mantra. Likewise, "Jyoti, Jyoti" sounds like it was recorded in an enormous cavern. Shakti's chant chases ...
