Black & White; Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles Dr. Holden (Dana Andrew), a psychologist knowledgeable about the occult, is dismayed by a friend's strange death, leading him to investigate a demon-worshipping cult in England. But the leader of that sect, Prof. Karswell (Niall MacGuinness), resists Holden's inquiries by calling up an actual demon to fight the good doctor. Can Holden hold his own in a battle of good vs. evil?
Based on the M.R. James short story "Casting the Runes," Jacques Tourneur's film is considered to be one of the true classics of the horror genre, relying heavily on the power of suggestion to create a heavy atmosphere of fear and dread. The famous, much-debated monster was added by the studio against Tourneur's wishes. The original, uncut version is known as NIGHT OF THE DEMON. Curse Of The Demon Reviews: "[A]ll subtlety and suspicion, smoke and mirrors."

Curse Of The Demon Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Clasic Horor A great movie, with a different twist without any sex....great for all the family. Submitted by a reviewer (Pittsburgh PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Cerebral horror/suspense from the past Since this DVD contains both the US and Brit versions, I recommend watching the later, Night of the Demons. Not only does the title have more significance, the Brit version is uncut, probably for some close monster mayhem that isn't gorey.
As the for the film, this is a classic feature with sturdy acting, thoughtful and thought-provoking material, and a terrific story. Does the demon really exist, or is it merely a manifestation brought about by the power of suggestion? Of course, the answer is at the movie's end, but the fun part is getting there. Just remember, this film was made in 1957 and does not run at the madcap pace of today's thrillers. The key here is suspense, and it is delivered up whole-heartedly. Classic thriller This is more a film-noir thriller in the style of CAT PEOPLE and LEOPARD MAN than a typical 1950's horror movie. It's been difficult to see this movie for a while, and the release of this DVD is a cause for celebration; it contains the original NIGHT OF THE DEMON as well as the shortened American version CURSE OF THE DEMON. It's guaranteed to give you chills; judge for yourself whether it would have been a better movie if the demon had not been shown on film, as director Tourneur had wanted. If you love classic thrillers, you will want to own this one to watch over and over and introduce your friends to. Submitted by a reviewer (Tempe, AZ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Curse of the Demon I saw this movie at the show back in the early Summer of 1958. I had not seen it since until I bought the tape from you. I am dissappointed that it is not available on DVD as tapes have a nasty habit of oxidizing and breaking after a few years. However, the plot is excellently written and it contains quality actors ( Dana Andrews, for example)
This should hold anyone's interest. It made enought of an impression on me to remember it after over Forty(40) years! Submitted by a reviewer (Long Beach, California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Curse Of The Demon film
$10.09 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and directed fable, the ultimate comment on the ...

$9.69 A meteor crashes in the desert near a small Arizona town, and research scientist John Putnam (Richard Carlson) thinks it's a spaceship, but no one will believe him except his loyal girlfriend, Ellen (Barbara Rush). Weird evidence begins to back up his theory however, from the strange behavior of some of the locals, to the slime trails, the ghostly noises in the phone lines, and the apparitions of hideous alien eyes swooping down on passing cars. Director Jack Arnold (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) lets the story unfold deliberately, and infuses the desert locale ...
